A great installment in the series

This was a great read, building on everything that was enjoyable in the first book. Aleron Kong is clearly growing as an author. He keeps the reader's interest throughout the book and as the character has grown, as the stage has widened, the challenges have exceeded any growth by a wide margin. The author has succeeded in maintaining dramatic tension. The character seems to have more to lose, to be on the precipice of greater success or heartache with each chapter, which is a nice balancing act. In many stories in the genre, the mechanics overwhelm or the gains become increasingly pointless. Not so, here.

Aleron Kong has avoided many of the pitfalls of the genre, deftly balancing character growth and world-building with challenge that adds to the dramatic tension. This is a nice trick, considering we generally know the conventions of the genre, which usually means we know what to expect next.. but not so much here. Forging is like watching a poker tournament where the game started with a spotlight on one table, where the tournament has 128 tables with 8 players each. In the first book the main character made it past the first round. He has some winnings from the first round but the stakes just keep increasing. In poker, as they say, you're playing your opponents. Here, in round two, every one seated at the table was a winner from the first round. His opponents are smarter. There are familiar characters from the first round, but interesting new characters from this table, and some glimpse into the challenges he'll face if he makes it past this round. The outcome is becoming more highly speculative.

Every now and then the main characters play smart for a few hands and then the author has them go all in, putting everything on the table. It's fun to watch the characters lose a hand, now and then, watch the interplay between the characters as they fold a hand or raise the ante. It's fun watching the author double the blinds. It's fun to watch the author throw an interesting prize into the center of the table that changes the game ...

I'm looking forward to Alliances, the next installment in the series.

Ramblings of a madman

Take from my review what you will. It is just my opinion, and opinions change from one person to the next. This book was believable for at least 1 reason. For me there were many, but everyone who thinks it through should agree that at least this one point was consistent : progression. If you end up in a cave trying to solve thing for a reward you would stay for days if you were a hardcore gamer. I have. And if the people with me were friends i would stay longer. The simple answer is, if you want a story where the mc is ridiculously op and kills dungeons daily, read something else. This book delves into the human aspects of the litrpg genre. What would you honestly do? How would time progress to an outside veiwer? Look no further, aleron answers honestly.

An exciting follow-up to The Land: Founding, this book takes us on some adventures in The Land that we won't soon forget! Throughout battles, dungeon exploration, building up a community and dealing with life's journey, Aleron's books continually keep me entertained and feeling like I'm right there with the characters - the story just flows. Keep up the good work sir!

Although Kyne's tale of business smarts has been around for some time (it was first published by William Randolph Hearst in 1921), it doesn't feel dated. Indeed, lumber wholesaler Cappy Ricks's situation (he "had more troubles than a hen with ducklings") mirrors that of many business leaders today. It's a straightforward parable about a young war veteran who's handed an opportunity that will either make or break his career. If he accepts the job and pulls it off, he's a go-getter; if he fails, it's curtains. The kid's motto-"It shall be done"-sums up Kyne's point: even if you're unsure, say you can do it. Then figure out how to do it and make sure you succeed. Go above and beyond. The 82-year-old story gets some slight spiffing up by business book writer Axelrod (Everything I Know About Business I Learned from Monopoly), and the afterword is especially helpful in pinpointing Kyne's main ideas.

A native of San Francisco, Peter B. Kyne was a prolific screenwriter and the author of the 1920 bestseller "Kindred of the Dust". His stories of Cappy Ricks and the Rick's Logging & Lumbering Company were serialized in "The Saturday Evening ""Post" and William Randolph Hearst's "Cosmopolitan" magazine. He died in 1957.

Game changer

I read this book because I've heard good things about it in a finance podcast. When I began reading it, I'll be honest, it was kind of unfriendly to me because I'm not a native English speaker, and many of the words they use in the conversations between characters use a lot of old local words.

That kept on along the whole book, but despide that, the message that this text conveys is a ver powerful one. There are a few books which I can say that are able to change the way you think about things and the way you DO things, and this is one of them. I've assumed the attitude described in this book and believe me, it changes everything.

It's kind of short too, so don't miss out on it.

Reading to ponder by

Peter Bernard Kyne has written an awe-inspiring story that he dedicated to his Chief, Brigadier-General Leroy S. Lyon, Commander of the 65th Field Artillery Brigade, 40th Division, United States Army, which most likely influenced the story behind The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How to be One. Although the title sounds like a sales pitch, and possibly that may have been Kyne's intention, of selling one's self in any scenario, he tells convincing story that shows the power of first impressions.

In order to understand this scenario, the story revolves around Alden P. Ricks, also known as Cappy Ricks and his lumber and logging company and his encounter with a go-getter that he described as anyone under 30 years old. And during the first few pages of the short story, the only man that he thought fit that trait was his son-in-law who he was seeking to fill a position at the company's Shanghai office. But little did he know that World War I veteran William E. Peck, a soldier who had list of unlikely circumstances after his service during the war, lost a part of his left arm, suffered a broken leg that was shorter than it should be, had a bout with pneumonia and influenza, and tuberculosis, would appear at his general office. And as he observed, illness did not stop Peck from pursuing his goal to land a job with Ricks's company. However, Rick and President of the company Mr. Skinner had something in mind to determine Peck's capability to prove his worthiness to the company. And as one reads Kyne's clever storyline, there is no denying how this narrative could have easily been included within the pages of a Dale Carnegie book.

The title of the book indeed already gives the reader an idea what they may expect the storyline may be about. But that should not discourage anyone from delving into the pages of this very short story that tells an interesting perspective of how one man's persistence, logic, and common sense helped to influence his goal.

How to be a self-starter--told with engaging story and it's quick.

Quick read to describe what I look for when i hire a new employee.

There is a man in my town who owns 14 Pizza Huts. I found out he made his managers read this book before he hired them. I figured if it's good enough for him, it would be good enough for me.

It is a fast read, entertaining but also gets across the point very well about self-starting.

I recommend it to bosses, parents and those who want to self-start everywhere.

A Valuable View into the Studio Life of a Great Artist

Alberto Giacometti's career does serve as a bridge connecting an art emanating from a series of cultural (or consider national) ideal sets to an art belonging to the eternal present that is humanist and material.

Neoclassicism's imitation of the good, Romanticism's creative interpretation of nature, Expressionism's subjective reflection, for example, boxed artistic output of the period to which it belonged. For each period, fixed ideas of art ruled supreme over the artist's experience--up to the disturbances, the all out wars of the twentieth century that shredded the notion of culture for much of European intelligentsia.

Giacometti found a way out, albeit a lonely path and one not well understood. And here Lord stepped in as Giacometti's advocate against an establishment whose nature is to tame and classify the wild process of studio life.

Lord's portrait of the portraitist wresting with the portrait of the writer is a closed loop of intertwined subjectivism, but by the observing distance he allows us, we are caused to reflect on the experience of process that is Giacometti's gift to the legacy of Western fine art tradition. From his life on, wakefulness to the experience of making has become the ultimate paradigm of post-modernism, and Giacometti got us here, and Lord saved the snapshot that allowed us to understand it.

The reader will find Lord's exquisitely developed shadow of a studio that is the mise-en-scène perfect for the placement of the odd personality that is the artist. It is not a report he gives, or is it a biography, critique or interpretation; it is an attempt to present what the writer sees exactly as he see it, a parallel process to that of the artist who is flustering to do the same to the writer, but on canvas.

This is not the book to be read once or twice, but it is a little consultant to be kept in the studio preferably.

easy read and great wisdom for Giacometti

Though it is non-fiction, the whole book are structured as short storywwhich make it easier to follow. The most amazing thing is you could witness, on each chapters, the struggle and the amount of changes of one painting from the beginning till the end. What I pulled out from reading great artists' process is that the best work comes from a place full of risk and determination, eventhough there are doubts. Once in a while during my time reading it, I found a wonderful wisdoms and encouragement from Giacometti's struggle. Great books for everyone. Highly recommended for artists and art students, who are looking for inspiration and encouragement for pursuing art career.

A Real Artist

Commissioning Giacometti to paint his portrait, sometimes James Lord would arrive at the studio and Alberto was not there. He was down the street in the smokey cafe with his head in his hands moaning about what a terrible artist he was and how was he ever going to learn to paint for god's sake. This was around 1960, when he was already world famous. Would that more contemporary artists today, in 2014, would question themselves, lament, suffer and struggle to make truly significant art. This is a great read.

Just what i needed

This book brought us up to speed on Cryogenics and the storage of cryogenic fluids.

It was easy to read, clear and consice and beats all the internet references out there.

Easy to read and easy to understand

This book is good for both engineering students and engineers. With an understanding of thermodyanmics the book is easy to read and easy to apply. It covers both thermodynamics cycles and system design. I had the joy of taking a class using this book and it was taught by the author. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in cyrogenic systems.

This is a really fantastic book!

I bothered to track the author down (emeritus at Louisiana Tech University) simply to tell him that "Cryogenic Systems" is the best thermodynamics book I've ever read! I had to quickly come up to speed on cryogenic separation of CO2 from synthesis gas. For a newbie to the field of cryogenics, it was incredibly helpful...logically and clearly (and with excellent examples) working its way up from gas liquifaction to air separation. It spans the ideal to the very real/practical. I've only worked through Chapters 3 and 4 (Gas Liquifaction and Separation/Purification), but the pedagogy is really wonderful. I presume the rest of the book is equally incisive.
