"The beautifully depicted signs, symbols, and objects in this work by astrologer Bartlett (Tarot Bible) illustrate 100 attempts to make sense of the world and our place in it. They are divided equally among chapters that cover "The Natural World," "The Divine World," "Signs and Systems," and "The Mystic World." The introduction explains what symbols are and their importance throughout history. It outlines the coverage in the book and discusses the "catalog pages" that illustrate groups of 12 symbols from various traditions. The entries that follow generally portray on a two-page spread each, an item and its history�??handprints on cave walls in Argentina, the breastplate of Aaron, �Vitruvian Man. Several entries address a type of item, such as tefillin (phylacteries worn by Jews), playing cards, or Fibonacci series. In many cases the book goes into extra detail. The summary on the Hindu elephant-headed god Ganesha, for example, is accompanied by information on Kangi-ten, a Japanese pair of gods that are male and female �elephants, and followed by pages on Hindu deities generally. Entries are accompanied by vivid reproductions of artworks. The accompanying captions provide basic facts on the items, though the descriptions are at times quite general rather than offering thorough explanations on the particular object shown. Since the spreads are fascinating but brief, some may wish for further reading advice that is unfortunately lacking. gesture and symbol to better understand what they reference

What a lovely book! As an artist, I am constantly looking to increase my awareness of line, gesture and symbol to better understand what they reference, and or how they might be perceived by my audience. This book has been on my studio desk for weeks now, and I often find myself drawn into its pages in between tasks. Each entry goes into great detail, but not so much that I am overwhelmed at any time -- I think the pages chocked full of images helps considerably. I've referenced the spread on birds already a dozen times, and it has prompted further interest and research into some of the specific tributes of the various species included.

I found this book to be most interesting with all the information and bright pictures. It makes a wonderful read or gift for the special someone in your life. Devil-Chasing Medal, also known as the Saint Benedict medal, this decoration is worn by Catholics as a protective amulet. It is believed to have immense power against evil. Since the fifth teen century, the reverse side of the medal carries the Latin words Vode retro Santana- "Step back Satan"- and other magical formulae used to ward off evil.

About the Author

Binita Mehta is Professor of French and Director of the International Studies Program at Manhattanville College, U.S. where she teaches a variety of courses in French language, literature, and film. She is the author of Widows, Pariahs, and ‘Bayadères’: India as Spectacle (2002) and has published several articles and book chapters on French and Francophone literature and film, South Asian diasporic cinema, and on the Francophone bande dessinée.

Pia Mukherji earned her doctorate in English Literature from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, U.S. Her research and publications are in the areas of British modernism, new-media texts, and diasporic cultures. She has taught a variety of courses on modernism, postcolonial literatures, film studies, and writing in the New York and Boston areas.

A "MUST READ" for the serious bodybuilder

The Steroid Bible in my opinion is a critical part of any serious bodybuilder's personal library. I have read it myself and have made unbelievable gains by making well informed decisions as to which supplements and or steroids are beneficial, detrimental or just plain worthless. People dont understand the benefits to be reaped from using muscle building drugs or even the dangers of missuse. The Steroid Bible tells you everything you need to know about nearly every steroid on the market. I believe this book has saved the lives of thousands of atheletes worldwide just by giving them a no-nonsense, well researched reference to allow them to make INFORMED decisions on how to improve and develop thier bodies the safest way possible. I believe that anyone who attempts to tackle the dangerous and confusing world of steroid use without having read this reference is doing themselves a great injustice, and may be playing "Russian Roulette" so to speak with their own body. Steroid use is not going away, you may as well educate yourself and come to your own conclusions. No other book I have read(and I have read quite a few)is nearly as comlete as the "Steroid Bible". I got my copy from a close friend and I am recommending it to all of my friends and co-workers. If you ever see it in a bookstore, just pick it up and skim through it and Im sure you will be compelled to buy it on the spot.

Valuable information I couldn't get anywhere else

The user experiences in this book made it more than worth my time and money. It gave me a perspective on steroids that I could not get anywhere else. Each user had a slightly different view on steroid use. Instead of just giving you one author's opinion, this book paints a vivid picture of the steroid world by providing detailed first hand accounts of steroid use. The info on side effects, how people get steroids, and steroid alternatives was also quite enlightening.

Complete garbage

Where do I begin? The book is rife with spelling and grammar errors as well as switching paragraph formatting at random places and for no apparent reason. As others have pointed out, the information found in this book could be found with just a bit of internet searching. I suppose if you know absolutely nothing about the subject matter, this book may be of some benefit to you but again this same information is available for free and in better written format on numerous websites and forums. At several points the author repeats himself as if he were making the statement for the first time, which makes me think he just copied and pasted from other sources and didn't even bother to edit for consistency. It is completely disorganized and wanders off on irrelevant tangents such as a lengthy discussion about testosterone replacement therapy and professing opinions on public policy as it relates to drugs and education. The book itself is spiral bound and just feels cheap. For $30+, I should be getting a hardcover. It's difficult for me to even call this a book. It feels more like a failed report put together at the last second by a lazy student.

In the name of all that is holy and good, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Hide your innocent eyes from its evil and run. The paper it's printed on would have made a greater contribution to humanity as toilet paper. There are good sources of information out there but this isn't one of them. Keep looking.

About the Author

Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1925. When she died at the age of thirty-nine, America lost one of its most gifted writers at the height of her powers. O'Connor wrote two novels, Wise Blood (1952) and The Violent Bear It Away (1960), and two story collections, A Good Man Is Hard to Find (1955) and Everything That Rises Must Converge (1964). Her Complete Stories, published posthumously in 1972, won the National Book Award that year, and in a 2009 online poll it was voted as the best book to have won the award in the contest's 60-year history. Her essays were published in Mystery and Manners (1969). In 1988 the Library of America published her Collected Works; she was the first postwar writer to be so honored. O'Connor was educated at the Georgia State College for Women, studied writing at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and wrote much of Wise Blood at the Yaddo artists' colony in upstate New York. She lived most of her adult life on her family's ancestral farm, Andalusia, outside Milledgeville, Georgia.

Her Own Words--The Best Words

THE HABIT OF BEING is required reading for any Flannery O'Connor fan. Nobody can explain Flannery like Flannery. Through her letters the reader has an immediate connection to the writer and the woman, and that connection made me regret even more that I did not know her personally. Sally Fitzgerald includes letters that show Flannery's human side, her cranky side, her funny side, even her arrogant side. I read the letters before the identity of A was revealed, and I was intrigued. I went back and read them again after that identify was made public, and I'm even more intrigued. To understand fully what Flannery was attempting in her stories, one needs to read the letters. To understand fully what she was attempting in her life, one needs to read the letters. No satisfactory biography has been written about Flannery O'Connor, but I'm not sure that one is necessary when we have at least a start at an autobiography with THE HABIT OF BEING.

Flannery wrote under a death sentence, and it seems inescapable that she expected - or at least hoped and imagined - that these letters would be published. Thus, they are written to you, dear reader, as much as to anyone. And they are superb. This is Flannery at her best. If you, like so many, are enthralled by her works, you will find this book essential. If you suspect that some of the self-appointed and so-called experts on her work could benefit from a strong laxative and are curious to find out what she herself really had in mind in her various stories, you will find this book immensely rewarding. And if you imagine that you might enjoy the musings of a soul whose wisdom, character, and intellect were each exceptional, you will find this book compelling.

Humor, Faith, and Work

Flannery O'Connor's correspondence is a fine testimony to humor, faith, and work in the life of a fascinating and absolutely unswerving human being. As she says in a letter to Andrew Lytle from this collection, the fact that she was a Catholic kept her from being a regional writer and the fact that she was a Southerner kept her from being a Catholic writer. If you want the best tutorial you're apt to ever read on how to write fiction, forget the usual "Write a Novel in 30 Days" garbage and get a copy of THE HABIT OF BEING. She'll also teach you quite a bit about living.

Roy Rosenzweig (1950-2007) was professor of history and founder of the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. Author of several books, including The Presence of the Past: Popular Uses of History in American Life (with David Thelen), and director of digital history projects, such as History Matters: The U.S. Survey Course on the Web and the September 11th Digital Archive, he received the Richard W. Lyman Award (presented by the National Humanities Center and the Rockefeller Foundation) for "outstanding achievement in the use of information technology to advance scholarship and teaching in the humanities."

has the present changed the past for the future?

Many professional and hobby-related things have been written posing the question of how historians will deal with research and presentation in this world where traditional sources of information and methods of delivering research change so much and so quickly. Rosenzweig examines "new media" and what it means for historians, professional or amateur.
First he looks at the change in quantity and quality of information available through new media. Is the large amount an asset, or does it obscure the quality of what is there? What about a forum for people who wish to post their own understanding of history, (Wikipedia) allowing any to access it whether the reader is capable of properly evaluating the evidence or conclusions?
But then, does this new media help historians reach a new audience? is it a great tool for teaching? Does it give researchers access to traditional scholarship without the need to travel to many libraries or wait on articles to come through inter-library loan?
Will this new world change the "business model" (my term) for history? The ethics? Does it lead to a future where historians can thrive, or will this species become extinct and be replaced by a new breed of scolar/teacher/debater?
Well written. easy to read yet thought provoking. . .

For historians wanting a view of how digital tools are changing our work

Roy Rosenzweig was an amazing scholar--this collection of his essays really covers a lot of ground in a deeply researched but very readable way. If you're interested in how digital technology and the internet are shaping the field of history, this book by a pioneer in that field is an excellent starting point. The Cohen/Rosenzweig "Digital History: A Guide to Gathering, Preserving, and Presenting the Past on the Web" (which is also available as an ebook free on the web) covers more practical, hands-on topics. BTW some of the essays in Clio Wired are available free if your library has access to JStor.
