The Savage God: A Study of Suicide, by A. Alvarez

"To write a beautiful book about suicide . . . to transform the subject into something beautiful―this is the forbidding task that A. Alvarez set for himself. . . . He has succeeded."―New York Times

"Suicide," writes the notes English poet and critic A. Alvarez, "has permeated Western culture like a dye that cannot be washed out." Although the aims of this compelling, compassionate work are broadly cultural and literary, the narrative is rooted in personal experience: it begins with a long memoir of Sylvia Plath, and ends with an account of the author's own suicide attempt. Within this dramatic framework, Alvarez launches his enquiry into the final taboo of human behavior, and traces changing attitudes towards suicide from the perspective of literature. He follows the black thread leading from Dante through Donne and the romantic agony, to the Savage God at the heart of modern literature.

An Intriguing Literary Look at Suicide
By Apostate
I haven't read any other studies of suicide, but like many introspective people, the subject is familiar and even, ever present. Being also a huge student and aficionado of literature, A Savage God made for a pretty soothingly delightful read.

To start off, Alvarez presents one with a mildly interesting account of the author's relationship (or acquaintanceship, rather) with Sylvia Plath and some musings on her suicide. This gives way to a somewhat terribly constructed historical analysis of suicide that more or less falls flat. The psychological angle is dealt with contemptuously -- as it should be -- and the most interesting part of the book, the literary analyses, takes over in the second half.

The book was interesting in fits and starts, but never so boring in any one sustained part that I was moved to stop reading. One was carried from one stage to the next pretty seamlessly. It is conversational in style, even if the style is rather stiff and British - never personal, yet personal all along, the way some people can strip down to bare skin and their every thought is on their lips, and yet you don't get the sense of anything "personal" emerging. It's pleasant nevertheless because it's direct and honest.

Even if a lot of light wasn't shed on what is, after all, a tremendously obscure subject, the book makes for good reading because there is a lot in it that I found myself thinking I would like to know. Just know. It doesn't matter how it connects with suicide, it doesn't matter how it illuminates the problems of the human condition: there are bits of knowledge that it is simply pleasant to be in possession of, and Alvarez provides plenty of those throughout the book. Also, I would be suspicious of any psychological or existential theory that would try to wrap suicide up in a package of overarching explanation -- it can't be done, as suicide is as varied as the experience of human suffering. Alvarez's method is more freewheeling, letting a picture of suicide emerge through a few case studies, a few historical tidbits, all resulting in giving one a clearer sense of suicide than one had to begin with. It's the same sense you would get if you were to sit down and do your research to write the first book on suicide ever written. In other words, it doesn't make suicide suddenly clear to you -- but you are left knowing more and seeing it with deeper understanding.

If it goes to recommending it, it's a pretty quick read, and well enough written so that even a person not particularly interested in either literature or suicide would find it not wholly unreadable. I notice I use the word 'pleasant' in connection with the book, despite its morbid subject: That is, strangely enough, the effect one is left with - nostalgic, wise, calm, looking at the world and at people with wide understanding eyes that see across centuries to the pain that persists contra all essential instinct.

An excellent study of the many aspects of suicide.
By E. Bukowsky
Alvarez's classic book, "The Savage God," examines the religious, sociological, philosophical and literary aspects of suicide through the ages. In pagan Rome, suicide was habitual and considered an honorable way to die. In the Middle Ages, suicide was regarded with revulsion as a mortal sin. Dante, in his "Inferno," consigned suicides to the seventh circle of hell, below the burning heretics and murderers. Later on, the Romantics associated premature death with genius and they admired people who ended their lives while they were still at their artistic peak. Throughout history, mankind has viewed suicide as everything from an unforgivable crime of self-murder to the sad act of a person for whom living has become intolerable.

In a more personal vein, Alvarez discusses the fascinating poet Sylvia Plath, with whom he was acquainted, as well as his own depression and attempted suicide. The section on Plath is superb. Alvarez was fond of Plath and he admired her work greatly. He reveals in a clear-eyed manner how the forces tearing her apart were stronger than those holding her together. "The Savage God" is an absorbing look at a subject often spoken of in whispers. The author points out that people who lose parents at an early age are more likely to take their own lives. He also examines in depth the strong and mysterious link between creative genius and the impulse toward suicide. "The Savage God" sheds light on the human condition in all of its complexity. Yet Alvarez never presumes to provide easy answers to questions that are unanswerable.

Sullivan, PhD, PT, Associate Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy, University of Southern California

The combination of Pete's voice as a writer and his veracity for 'science over sentiment' distinguish this book from the rest of the pack." -Stephen J. Page, PhD, MS, MOT, FAHA, Director, Neurorecovery and Rehabilitation Laboratory; The Ohio State University Medical Center

"Brain plasticity is one of the most exciting discoveries ever made because it has implications for everyone. I Owe My Recovery to This Book
By Scott Gallagher
I can't say enough about how Stronger After Stroke has influenced my life after my stroke four years ago. This isn't just a book about stroke recovery. It is stroke recovery in microcosm, an essential part no less important than any activity you'll ever do or piece of equipment you'll ever have. Every stroke and every stroke victim is different, but each stroke victim can come away from this book understanding what stroke recovery is, able to tailor their own unique start point for recovery or able to carry recovery on through to completion once begun. Only some of the highlights I've gleaned are:

Recovery is hard work. That's the overriding theme of this book and the author hammers away at it relentlessly, using such phrases as "Challenge Equals Recovery" and "Push the Issue" He understands far more than anybody else what stroke recovery really means and what it requires. I was in the Army infantry and involved in sports all my life, but recovery is the very toughest thing I've ever done. Beginning stroke recoverers need to be prepared for what's coming and informed that anything less than full commitment is really just a waste of time. Stronger After Stroke does that, and that alone is a crucial service.

Background concepts and latest research findings. Neuroplasticity is the foundation behind stroke recovery and its effect on the medical and scientific worlds is nothing less than revolutionary. The author explains neuroplasticity clearly and completely, interspersing examples of it throughout the text along with many other vital concepts such as synergistic movement, spasticity, learned nonuse and the 4 phases of recovery. The reading may flow easily but you'll come away with a comprehensive understanding of stroke recovery thinking and terminology. Also, here is where the major revisions of this new 2nd Edition really make a difference over the 1st Edition. Thanks to neuroplasticity stroke recovery is changing fast, but Stronger After Stroke has been thoroughly updated to relay new findings and take advantage of incoming developments.

New therapies, new methods, new equipment. There's so many. Stronger After Stroke covers mirror therapy, induced constraint therapy, mental practice, virtual reality, electrical stimulation, bilateral training, music and rhythm, gyms and home set-ups, a ton of equipment and the list goes on. The value of this material to me is its usefulness as a reference guide. Stroke recovery is so complex and so long with so many pitfalls, twists and turns you'll be returning to this information time and again for new ideas and suggestions. Believe me, recovery is above all else sheer monotony and mind-numbing repetition. Your program must stay fresh and varied to keep it going (see the section on "Therapy Soup: Mix and Match"). Again, the newness of the 2nd Edition really helps. With the new "Get Your Hand Back" section my hand is once again showing noticeable improvement.

Safety. Take it from this bull-headed idiot personally, this is the Stronger After Stroke subject you should consciously elevate to the top of your priority list, as emphasized by the author repeatedly. I didn't and learned the hard way that while mind-blowing agony from injury is great for increasing body sensation, recovery stops cold, and it really stops if you're dead. There's a "What Precautions Should Be Taken" part in every section, as well as a full chapter on "Safeguarding the Recovery Investment" and individual safety tips throughout where appropriate.

Strategy and tips for recovery. Stronger After Stroke provides an invaluable and endless array of ways to plan, individualize, and most important, maintain your recovery program. Task-specific training, for one example, will make it meaningful, measuring your progess will evaluate it, the recovery calendar will structure it and the stages of recovery glimpses its future. Eating habits, sleeping habits, lifestyle, work schedule and a myriad of other details are all examined for their impact on recovery and how best to blend them into your program. All of this matters; exactly how much you make it matter will determine exactly how well you recover (the author calls this "Living Recovery")

Although Stronger After Stroke is fantastic as a reference, it is an integrated whole. It really is a complete map for a successful journey of recovery and, as such, no aspect of it can be readily ignored. Miss something and that may become the point where your recovery stumbles or dead-ends. Here I would like to urge readers to pay special thought and attention to two sections I think fundamental to recovery, the chapter "Motivation: The Recovery Fuel" and the section "Keep the Core Values Close". This is unbelievably essential stuff.

There's so much more, but I have one more comment. Back in the those first dark days of life as a stroke victim Stronger After Stroke gave me hope when nobody and nothing else did. My own doctors and therapists had me relegated to a wheelchair the rest of my life, and they did it with all the nonchalance and carelessness of a remark on today's weather. Those were the people I entrusted my life to. But this book told me I was in charge of my own recovery, that the way my life went now was my responsibility. It would take an unbelievable amount of hard work but I could do it. It was all up to me. I took that message and held onto it for dear life. I'll never let it go.

The results? Four years that seemed so long at times are now gone and I walk normally now, albeit only a few dozen yards at a time. That will improve with time and effort. By the end of the year I fully expect to walk along our beautiful redwood trails and sandy beaches just as I would have before that fateful day in June, 2009. I'll begin running. My arm is at full strength and I can draw again, crudely. I owe all this, my recovery, to one book and its author, Peter G. Levine. I cannot thank him enough.

"Stronger after Stroke" ... hard work and hope
By Michael
In January 2010 I had a brain abscess. Twelve months later, after a cursory exam, the doctor who had been assigned to me announced “Well, let’s see what neuroplasticity does.” In other word, you’re at the end of the line (the traditional 12 months) and nothing else can be done with you. But even I knew that somehow you had to prime the neurological pump, so to speak. It just didn’t happen on its own. I canceled my next appointment with her and referred to her as “Dr. Donothing.”

Initially, I looked for information on brain abscesses, but discovered very little that I could understand or was helpful. I realized that the symptoms were very similar, if not identical, to stroke. So I made believe that I had had a stroke. The literature was more abundant, but filled with strategies on how to adapt to your new condition. I didn’t want to adapt.

Then I encountered “Stronger after Stroke”. The message was simple and not sugar coated. Basically, repetitive action and massed practice and six to eight hours of exercise each day. The book was filled with helpful techniques and strategies. I became obsessed with it.

When I left Dr. Donothing’s office I had a “chicken wing” right arm. I couldn’t raise it above my shoulder and I couldn’t stretch it out. Now I use my affected hand and arm to retrieve and return items to the kitchen cabinets. I shampoo my hair with my affected arm only, and so forth. I now have essentially full range of motion.

Recently, I saw a neurologist who gave me a complete neurological exam. She reviewed Dr. Donothing’s final evaluation. She was floored by the progress I had made. This book has changed my life. I’m not exaggerating. There is still work to do, but I feel very hopeful. And that what this book also gives you. Hope.

A must for stroke survivors
By Elderly Jim
Everyone who has a stroke, and their caregivers, should be given a copy of this book - to understand the four week government funded "game" being played with their therapy. The author describes the limitations of the four week "therapy" being practiced in the stroke treatment locations. Then, and much more importantly, goes on to describe the fundamentals of long-term therapy and the responsibility for success that can only come from the stroke patient and caregivers. You'll need to read and read several times over, and keep by your side as a reference, and, importantly, use it as the basis for defining a long-term plan with any therapists consulted.

Required reading for all Caribbean nationals
By Paula E. David
This book should be required reading for all Caribbean people. This is the history we learnt in school told by a contemporary. It adds meat and marrow to the skeleton theories we memorized and regurgitated for external examinations. Maria Nugent was a woman of her times. She was, therefore, less than enthusiastic about being dispatched to a remote colonial outpost to live among the "blackies".

You have to be patient with poor Maria when reading her journal. She was orthodox in every way imaginable. But although she was not given to thinking outside the box, she was far from clueless. She was intelligent, if in a mundane way.

The prevailing mantra of the time was that empire was a noble project and slavery liberated the "blackies" from darkest (read non-Christian) cannibalistic Africa. There were times when I found her attempts at convincing herself of this quite frankly, amusing. In describing a scene where a new shipment of Africans had been brought ashore, she employed the most amazing mental gymnastics to convince herself that the new imports were happy to be where they were and in the state in which they found themselves. This same Maria Nugent is later terrified out of her skull when the happy "blackies" of Haiti inexplicably revolt. She was beside herself with worry that revolution fever would spred to Jamaica and infect the happy blackies there.

But don't be too hard on the good lady; she was a conventional "thinker"(now there's an oxymoron). Her journal is interesting from the point of view that it gives first hand narratives about events and a time which seem academic and far removed from who we are as 21st Century Caribbean people. Although I knew intellectually that these events were very real and that they have shaped who we now are; reading this book sharpened my emotional understanding of the events and time.

Completely enthralling
By OnlineCounsellingJamaica
If you want to know Jamaica, you have to read this book. It is written by a unique and contented woman who lived in Jane Austen's time and was happily married and willing to use her good judgement and joie de vivre in conducting her daily life. A historic and historical document of great grace, humour and breadth.

Adventures in the Anthropocene: A Journey to the Heart of the Planet We Made, by Gaia Vince

We live in times of great change on Earth. In fact, while previous shifts from one geological epoch to another were caused by events beyond human control, the dramatic results of our emission of carbon to the atmosphere over the past century have moved many scientists to declare the dawn of a new era: the Anthropocene, or Age of Man.

Watching this consensus develop from her seat as an editor at Nature, Gaia Vince couldn’t help but wonder if the greatest cause of this dramatic planetary change—humans’ singular ability to adapt and innovate—might also hold the key to our survival. And so she left her professional life in London and set out to travel the world in search of ordinary people making extraordinary changes and, in many cases, thriving.

Part science journal, part travelogue, Adventures in the Anthropocene recounts Vince’s journey, and introduces an essential new perspective on the future of life on Earth.

"Our species has exploded into a new kind of force—one species able to alter the physical, chemical and biological properties of the planet on a geological scale. Gaia Vince’s important book provides the evolutionary, temporal and biophysical context to show with clarity the stunning speed and magnitude of the human footprint on the planet. She manages to inspire with hope while conveying a cry of urgency."

—James Lovelock, author of Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth

“A beautifully written book that raises the most profound question of our time: ‘How should we live?’ In the past this has been primarily a personal question, but now it has become the central question for us as a species—and the fate of nearly every species on our planet (including our own) rests on our answer.”
—Ken Caldeira, Stanford University

“Gaia's remarkable journey is a unique inventory of life on earth, both wild and human, at this important moment in our history.”
—Bill Oddie

“This is a remarkable journey from a remarkable journalist... The Anthropocene era she documents emerges as something richer, more vital and more interesting than any previous era. In her eyes people are heroes rather than villains. Read this and you can believe in the future.”

The Voice of the New Generation
By J. E. Williams
Gaia Vince's book's subtitle, "A Journey to the Heart of the Planet We Made," says it better than the title, and that's too bad because this book definitely has heart. I've read and re-read more than fifty books on the subject of sustainability and post-human philosophy, and there's none better than this one. It's well-written, though rambles at times, but that doesn't matter. The author has hit the nerve of the issue. As a self-aware species and geophysical force, our responsibility is great. Will we live up to the demand of our new role? So far, we have not. But the positive message of this book says we have to and will. Her's is the voice of the generation that will inherent want others have made, the voice I've been waiting to hear. J. E. Williams, author of "The Andean Codex" and Light of the Andes."

By C. M. Stahl
Sometimes seeing the word “Anthropocene” in a title can be daunting. It resonates with a lot of facts but also considerable emotion. This reviewer is pretty tired of emotion and moral imperatives when it comes to reading a book. The extraordinarily adventurous Vince did not do that. She looked at a lot of issues that are laden with “holier than thou” platitudes and provided several sides of the issues in order to present a very readable book on how we humans have changed the earth and what that might all mean.

As the title informs this is the planet we made. Any slightly knowledgeable and non-delusional person of average intelligence knows that. Certainly there are gainsayers but they are in a minority who either have their heads in the sand or have something to gain by their iconoclasm-like politicians for instance. Leaving that discussion aside, Vince was clear that we humans have changed the world dramatically and perhaps forever. Yet it is not a screed wrought with hopelessness. She presents a lot of good ideas along with her tales of interesting people she met in her worldwide travels done to complete this book.

Using ten chapters to describe aspects of earth and how they are changing, she met people who are doing things to improve the earth no matter how small their efforts. One of those chapters is about farmlands and she investigated ways to improve the harvests and feed more people. One litmus test of her even keeled presentation has to do with GMOs-genetically modified organisms. Despite the often shrill damnation of GMOs we do know that it has been going on since the dawn of agriculture. If we care to read the literature we know that to date there have been no studies to indicate harmful effects on consuming such food (it should be noted however that we do not have longitudinal studies yet). We also know that there are tremendous numbers of peoples in the world that could use nutrition and GMOs are trying to reduce the size of that population by feeding them. They also offer one way to make profitable farming where it has not been traditionally successful.

So we can like me, be middle class Americans and shun GMOs because we can afford to, but a Sudanese refugee living in a camp has little option about their nutrition. Vince declaimed the opaqueness of much of the Agribusiness who prospers from their hybrid plants and she acclaimed efforts often from universities to offer alternative GMOs in their agriculture departments. The problem is not that food is genetically modified it is that companies like Monsanto do not offer information about their products and force the farmer to re-buy seed annually or pay the legal price for not doing so. I get it. Big agribusiness is looking for profit but at the same time if they can feed those who are underfed and if smaller enterprises with more open source policies can make the food to feed the starving and help farmers earn a wage in the outback of Africa or Asia then we want GMO foods. After all we have been modifying our produce for about 10,000 years.

Another divisive issue that she tackled had to do with atomic energy. An issue fraught with emotionalism and less objective thinking. She addressed the down side of increased nuclear energy use and that is the drama of accidents and memories of the two bombs we dropped on Japan 70 years ago. It can be scary or a reader can understand that there are many more slow deaths-ones not exhilarating our emotions, from the carbon based deaths that occur all of the time. When it comes to killer’s carbon is much of a master over nuclear energy. The author again took a principled stance on the issue and presents more than one side.

She also discussed geoengineering which a lot of people who want to put the Anthropocene issues onto something else and rename it as an “Act of God” would agree to. But is not so simple to put her in that camp. Geoengineering is essential to solving the problem of this Anthropocene induced environment that we are leaving to our kids and theirs. Proactive measures must be taken and cost benefit analyses have to occur. We are not going to return to some mythical days of yore where extinct species are cloned and re-introduced or carbon dioxide is controlled and we have to worry about snakes in Eden tempting us with an apple. We are beyond that and so we have to look at methods (regardless of their repugnance) that will benefit humankind.

Vince had a couple of themes that echo throughout the book. On is the positive feedback loop that is creating our Anthropocene environment. She cited several examples but we will look at one for this purpose. In the Arctic we have an ice melt caused by warming oceans. The ice melt exposes decaying forest land which generates carbon dioxide which had been sequestered for many centuries. While those areas express their decaying gasses, there is less reflective white offered by ice and snow. Thus more melt occurs and the problem continues. Vince often returned to a discussion about our activities and their relevance to positive feedback loops that are not actually so positive to our environment.
She provided a significant number of groups who are detrimental to a slowing of the Anthropocene and they include religious leaders who are intent on providing false information in order to keep their subjects from acting. Governmental corruption as well as NGOs with personal interests at stake are included. Tribal conflict and simply backward thinking are no help towards coming to solutions that will make life better for those that need it most.

Vince made her book (and you can learn some about here), by traveling the world and meeting with many interesting people who are attempting in their own small way, to rectify some of the wrongs we people are doing to our earth. My only skepticism in reading of her interesting conversations with idea laden subjects is why have not some of these curious and apparently successful projects caught the attention of political and business leaders?

She also told a story that was new to me and very interesting. After having separately visited the barren island of Ascension both Charles Darwin and Joseph Hooker came up with a plan to create a microclimate of rainforest which meant planting trees in order to gather rainclouds and essentially make the rainforest that exists there today. I found this detail especially fascinating since Darwin never returned after his initial visit and it is likely that Hooker did not either. This appears to be a thought experiment that worked. I am glad Vince taught me that.

In general I agree with here about the dual sense of informed and rational decisions about the Anthropocene invasion on our physical lives and the notion that we are not going to solve it by living in caves while our autos sit rusting. I appreciated Vince’s looking at the conditions that exist from something other than a black and white issue. It was a realistic perspective of what has occurred and what is occurring and how we may stem the tide of wrecking the future.

I could not agree with every option proposed such as the notion of an “Environment Fee” for using resources at risk. It is less that I think it is a poor idea than I think of all the detritus left behind by trying to enforce it. That is if it could be enforced at all.

Finally she exits the book with a coda about her son, born while she did her investigation to create the book (that she had time to bear a son while world traveling is a testament to her drive). In it she describes how through geoengineering our world is still habitable some fifty years in the future. Acquiesces have to be made since we have not solved the problem but have remediated it to some degree. It doesn’t sound like the world I would want to live in but at my age I do not have to worry about it too much.

Republicans: Read This Book!
By PasadenaTeacher
A must read for anyone interested in climate change and human response to it across the globe. Engagingly told in a series of stories from the real-life adventure-travels in the Anthropocene by an author who writes intelligently from the heart. I wish that all Republicans would read it. This may help them divorce politics from what is a true world-wide crisis. This is a book I will treasure and pass on to friends.
