BLACK SOUL, by Ahmet M. Rahmanovic

"The greatest assets are its characters. Well rounded and written in depth, the relation-ships between them can be compared to some in the world's greatest literature. Namely, relationship between Hamza and his father, by type and value is reminiscent of Andrei Bolkonsky and his father, in Tolstoy's "War and Peace."
It is a kind of love, between father and son, which on the surface reveals little, if anything. However, its depths contain everything one that human being is able to offer another.

- Academic, Tvrtko Kulenovic , Literature Professor

" Black Soul is the riveting tale of one man's journey from the battle-torn hills of Sarajevo to the bustling, windblown streets of Chicago.
Hamza's story describes the amazing resilience of a human being who has visited the depths of hell and has lived to tell about it.

- Susan Bertuglia

"Black Soul is a novel that cannot be put down, and grabs the reader from page one.
It is a story of love and war, of tenderness and brutality. The author depicts the raw, often brutal story and unorthodox aggression, the likes of which are unprecedented in the his-tory of war, madness, insanity, blood, and hypocrisy of world powers."

- Mugdim Karabeg, Journalist

Starts off great then gets a little strange
By J. Mendoza
Starts off in Bosnia with a storyline that is exciting and fast. The authors use of historical narrative to put things is perspective is excellent. I was asonished to read the quotes and facts he gathered. I just returned from a visit to Bosnia and the first third of this book played with my emotional strings. I felt the anger and sadness caused by this period of history and I felt great respect for the people of Sarajevo. After the character leaves Bosnia the story stays interesting, but starts to wane. At the end there are moments of excitement, but the story has lost its impact. Still a great read and the historical perspective alone is worth reading.

Speechless
By Sarajevo citizen
This morning, I learnt about this book and I read it without taking a breath. As a person who survived the Bosnian war, I was deeply hurt because it brought the memories back.i do not really think that people who have not lived the war could actually experience the book as emotionally as we who have survived. Also, the language matters because I read it in Bosnian.Sometimes, the translated material is not as strong as when written in the mother tongue. This book is a great piece of work and valuable document of what specifically Bosnian Muslims and all those who saw Bosnia and Herzegovina as their homeland have been through. It should be on the shelf in each Bosnian house,to serve as a reminder what happened, along with other similar books, so that we do not forget as well as for the future generations.

Excellent testimony of the times
By Len
"Black Soul" is a story about the civil war in Bosnia-Herzegovina after the break-up of Yugoslavia and the weird, all pervasive hatred the Christian Serbs had for the Moslem Bosnians and vice-versa. Hamza is a young Bosnian fighter who witnesses the almost surreal spectacle of his best man murdering his wife and daughter as he watches from a distance through the lens of a video camera. From that moment on, his soul has turned black and he can think of nothing but revenge. Mr. Rahmanovic has depicted the pointless cycle of murder followed by revenge followed by murder perhaps a little too well. As a testimony of the times, I have not come across better however, as a story, it's a tad bleak.
