While casting new perspectives on the place of transnational relations in an increasingly globalized world, this work also sheds new light on the evolution of Iranian society, countering the explanation furnished by nationalist ideology that has been reproduced by the Islamic Republic itself. Its unique approach to the analysis of Iranian society through the theme of travel and borders considers the links and even the quarrels between the centre of Iranian society and the periphery, and the foreign elements that have contributed to society’s development. Travel is key to these interactions and, following the travels of merchants and workers, students or the faithful, elected officials and experts, or exiles and refugees, this book offers an anthropological study of travel that re-thinks Iranian history and national identity.

About the Author

Fariba Adelkhah is a social anthropologist and director of research at Sciences Po/Centre d’�tudes et de recherches internationales (CERI) in Paris. Her main research interests focus on the interplay between social changes and political transformations in Iran since the second half of the twentieth century. She has also undertaken important research on Afghanistan as a mirror for Iranian society.

It's the Crutchfields v. the Malones in this lush Romeo and Juliet story about two related California families that have hated each other for generations, even though (or perhaps because) they own adjacent tracks of ocean-view land. Like the rest of her family, 17-year-old Kait Malone blames the Crutchfields for everything, particularly now that her father's in jail for killing Robert Crutchfield in what the Malones claim was an accident. Money is short, because the Malones refuse to sell any of their land, so Kait and her sister must transfer to the public high school under assumed names. And then the unthinkable happens: Kait falls head over heels in love with a beautiful boy named Bram--who turns out to be a Crutchfield. As their romance deepens, Kait's lies about her identity grow ever more complicated. She clings to her conviction that the Crutchfields are monsters--except for Bram--although this belief grows harder and harder to sustain as she meets his family. When Bram's mother loans her the crumbling journals of one of the two sisters who began the feud, Kait finds the truth is a source of compassion. Yet she still postpones her revelation to Bram, as tension builds and the situation finally escalates out of her control. Drawing on the all-too-familiar theme of young lovers from warring families, Pearson (David v. God) recounts the relationship between Kaitlin, a high school senior who keeps a journal, and her more well-to-do artist-boyfriend, Bram. Borrowed diaries reveal to Kaitlin that the two California families are related five generations back, when two sisters became estranged as the result of a marital infidelity. More recently, Kaitlin's father is accused of killing Bram's father, perhaps accidentally, in a feud over rights to their neighboring properties and, further straining credibility, Kaitlin manages to win Bram over by concealing her identity. The whole maudlin tale is never fully sorted out and, in a highly unlikely denouement, Kaitlin gives a confused speech to her class about escaping the past and being honest. This seems to win back Bram, who says, "I never did care much for history." The story also suffers from repetitiveness (readers are reminded many times that Kaitlin is a "proud Malone") and the writing is filled with platitudes and clich‚d writing ("my footsteps kept time with my beating heart"). Heavy on formula, it seems more like a romance novel than a trenchant adolescent love story. Ages 12-up.

Gr 7-10-Like the Hatfields and the McCoys, the Malones and Crutchfields have always hated one another. Their long-standing feud started 100 years earlier when two sisters disagreed over one's illegitimate pregnancy. Ever since then, the Crutchfields have had the money and the power, the Malones the land, and both families are ruthless in trying to hurt the other. When Kaitlin Malone's father is put in prison for killing a Crutchfield, she and her sister are forced to go to the public high school under assumed names. There Kaitlin falls in love with a boy whose passion for drawing matches her need for writing in her journal. The only problem is that the boy is none other than the son of the man her father killed. As she waits for the right time to reveal her true identity, she gets to know Bram and his family. Suddenly, her world is turned upside down because the Crutchfields are not the villains that her family had always made them out to be. Meanwhile, her lies get more and more complicated. The truth about her identity comes out in the end, but luckily (and predictably), after initial feelings of betrayal, Bram, too, realizes their love is stronger than any family history. This is a good book to use to talk about points of view and perspectives, with believable characters and a fast-moving, if somewhat transparent, plot.-Rebecca Hogue Wojahn, Riverside Middle School, Watertown, WI

Sweet Romance

This was a filler pick for me when I needed to buy something for a few bucks to make my free shipping on Amazon. I thought it sounded like a sweet romance and would be a nice change from the other books I've been reading lately. It wasn't until I wrote the author's name in my blog post that I realized why it sounded familiar. Mary E. Pearson also wrote The Adoration of Jenna Fox, one of the first YA books I read and reviewed for my blog.

Scribbler of Dreams is not a futuristic or sci-fi story along the veins of Adoration, instead it is much more grounded in the realities of a typical romance novel. Not that that is a bad thing. It was exactly what I was looking for and Pearson delivered nicely. Girl meets boy, falls in love, but they are torn apart by deception, in this case the deception is due to their warring families, a la Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. As a Shakespeare lover I can't say I hate the story, and Pearson resists following too closely.

The only part that bothered me was the insta-love (and yes, I know this does follow R&J), but I found in today's world it just wasn't as believable. Kaitlin feel for Bram before even speaking to him, and within a few pages she was in love and willing to defy her family for a boy who believes she is someone else. Someone who's father hadn't killed his own. **Not a spoiler, as it's clearly on the back cover** I understood her deception initially, but the further along it went the more frustrating it became. Luckily it's a quick read at only 223 pages in pocketbook size, so I didn't have time to get really annoyed.

If you're looking for a sweet romance with some tear jerking scenes this is a quick and easy read.

It came to me with a different cover on it instead. It's still the same book but a completely different cover. It was my favorite book when I was in junior High. I have now bought this book three times because it gets lost or someone hasn't returned it. It's a great book.

Oh the lying just goes on and on...

Right now I on page 109 and I had to take a break. Kait's lying is getting sooo long that she has now given her best friend some terminal condition!!! Man, I just want to yell JUST TELL HIM!!!! OK, so I'm going to continue reading, but I may switch back to This Lullaby when I need something to read this evening.

I ended up finishing the book and was kind of disappointed at the end. The author seemed to get tired at the end and just seemed to want to do a quick wrap up. I felt sorry for the families and I felt that her revelations from Maggie's journals did not help the families at all. The back stories behind the colleges seemed to be unresolved. Was Bram going to go to college or not? Most likely not, but the book left many things still up in the air.

About the Author
Alan Karras (University of California, Berkeley) studies the eighteenth-century Atlantic world and global interactions more broadly concerning illegal activities like smuggling. Karras is the Associate Director of International & Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and has served as chair of the College Board’s test development committee for world history and as co-chair of the College Board's commission on AP history course revisions.

Elizabeth Pollard is a historian of the ancient world, in particular of Roman and Greek civilizations, and her research interests cross the disciplinary and methodological boundaries between history, religious studies, classics, and women's studies. Her pedagogical interests include the effectiveness of web-based technology and world history in teaching, learning, and writing about ancient history. She teaches the world history survey regularly, and serves on the executive committee of the World History Association.

Clifford Rosenberg is associate professor of European history at City College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. He specializes in the history of modern France and its empire and is the author of Policing Paris: The Origins of Modern Immigration Control Between the Wars. He is currently studying the spread of tuberculosis between France and Algeria since the mid-nineteenth century.

Robert Tignor (Princeton University) is Professor Emeritus and the Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Princeton University and the former three-time chair of the history department. With Gyan Prakash, he introduced Princeton’s first course in world history nearly twenty years ago. Professor Tignor has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in African history and world history and written extensively on the history of twentieth century Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya. Besides his many research trips to Africa, Professor Tignor has taught at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

The first of two substantial criticisms I have of this book is ironically one of its (and the author's) strengths - it is authoritative because Galitz has been at the forefront of UI research since the beginning, but he puts too much of that historical information into this book. As historical context it has some value, but too much of it leaves one with the feeling that the book is somewhat dated. Editing out the excess detail about text-based CRT displays might leave it feeling more current (the current GUI information is there, but is diluted too much by the historic information).

My second criticism is that the book could also use substantial editing to reduce its bulk, without eliminating any valuable information (of which there is a great deal); there is a lot of redundancy. Some is fine for reinforcing the author's points, but this book has too much - I have frequently read through a bulleted list of design points (presented first), only to then read exactly the same information in a slightly expanded form over many more pages. This is specifically true in what might be considered the heart of this book - the fourth chapter of Part 2; Step 3: Principles of Good Interface and Screen Design. It covers in detail part three of the author's fourteen-step procedure for UI design. This chapter alone is about 180 pages long! With tighter editing it (and the book) could probably be shrunk by 1/3 without any loss of information.

That said, even though this may not be the most concise source of (application and web) UI design guidelines, it makes up for that in breadth and depth, and the credibility and authority of its author.

Redundant information, lists; obsolete info

For a book that claims to be the definitive guide, its content is very old. The dialogs look like they are from the early 90s. And, so are the standards cited. The Microsoft guidelines from 1995 are cited as a current reference. I supposed someone could try to claim that the lessons presented are 'timeless', but to me, that is ridiculous. User interfaces are not timeless.

The larger problem I have is the redundancy. The same information is presented over, and over, and over. Eliminate the redundancy, and the book would be 1/2 of its size.

A realistic awareness of the financial and political constraints that can undermine even the best-conceived projects is also vital.

Pretty useful vocabulary builder

I have been using this set of 3 discs for about 5 weeks and have now ordered levels 2 & 3. The first disc is real basic stuff that gets you started, the second disc has lists of various types of vocabulary, like common nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and prepostions, and it is really worth going over these time and time again so as to master both the vocabulary and the pronunciation of these basic word lists. At least once you have go the basic vocabulary down, you have something to build on, so it gets easier.
Disc three is more phrase oriented, though it should be born in mind that each lesson is designed to illustrate some kind of grammatical rule. For some reason my disc set came with the wrong book (French instead of Spanish) so I have relied totally on the audio, though I do have a basic Spanish book that I refer to occasionally if I can't properly identify the spelling of a word from what I hear.
The only beef I do have is that while some of the phrases are obviously very useful, like "donde esta el banco mas cercano?" (where is the nearest bank?), others are not. You can just imagine landing in a Spanish speaking country and the first thing out of your mouth is asking for the nearest ATM or bathroom, but not all of the pattern sentences in the exercises are as useful.
It IS hard work learning Spanish this way, but if you do a lot of driving or can take a CD player with you wherever you are, then it is also incredibly economical with what would probably otherwise be dead time used productively. Being able to communicate in Spanish is an incredibly valuable skill in the workplace these days, and even if you don't use it for that, there are so many Spanish-speaking tourism destinations in the Western hemisphere that learning Spanish while you drive around can only widen your scope. I have already found that after 5 weeks of using this plus the Instant Immersion Spanish discs in my car I can understand lengthy chunks of spoken Spanish, read newspapers and understand 85%, and understand Spanish language posts on the Internet tolerably well. My speech still needs a lot of work, but that is to be expected.
So, yes, I do recommend this set of discs, but I would use them in conjunction with something else for variety. You will still spend a lot less and learn a lot more than you would going to classes or on a course. Spanish will be my fifth language, if you count English as one, so I do know of what I speak.

Excellent for beginners

I found the lesson structure very effective. They begin simply and build on previous lessons. I had no prior experience with Spanish, but after completing the Level 1 tapes I would feel comfortable trying to communicate basic needs and questions.
I agree with some of the other reviewers that a separate book would be helpful to learn written Spanish. However, the included booklet was all I needed to successfully learn the vocabulary on these tapes. (By the way, I've tried other language methods that do not provide ANY written materials which was very ineffective for me personally. I need to see a word to fully comprehend it and how to say it.)
I ordered the cassettes (since the CD version was backordered), and I did experience some slight volume variances. The volume changes were slight and rare, so overall they didn't impact my ability to learn the materials. I've just ordered Level 2 on CD, so hopefully that won't be an issue.
My one complaint--about the cassettes specifically--is the difficulty of finding the start of a lesson while rewinding. That's an issue with the medium, not the manufacture of the tapes. Hopefully the CDs will make finding the lesson starts easier.

Convenient

Hello.
Nearly all of these lessons are a convenient size for those around-town trips - not too long, not too short - and are a great way to use some of those otherwise-lost minutes driving to and from work.
Any less-than-ideal elements to these CDs? Yes. I have no opportunity to speak the Spanish I'm learning (apart from speaking along with the CDs), so most of my skill, so far, is in listening and reading rather than speaking. However, I can tell that when I find myself in a situation requiring the use of the language, it will be an easy next step.
I've nearly completed this first set and will soon order the second.
