Must Read

This is a must read book for parents, middle school students, high school students, unschoolers, homeschoolers, and college students alike. Blake has managed to simplify and get down to the root of many concepts that I've spent years studying and trying to figure out. He explains motivation, finding your purpose, how to use the resources at your disposal, how to get the most out of learning, and so much more. I can't praise this book enough. You get out of your education what you put into it, no matter which school you go to, or don't go to. Blake has done what so many have tried and failed to do before him. I encourage everyone to read this book as soon as possible.

Must-read for young adults wanting to learn how to navigate life

Fantastic read! All students, and especially anyone passionate about learning (or who wants to rekindle the passion to learn), should read this!
Even though self-directed learning might not be for everybody, it's a good idea to get exposed to it to understand your options. This book was greatly insightful and helped me figure our how to handle my current alternative education/career challenges. This book is inspiring without being corny. It is a great addition to Blake Boles' other book, Better than College, which helped me learned how to learn on my own without resorting to student debt. The Art of Self-Directed Learning, on the other hand, dives deep into the psyche of a self-directed learner. Self-directed learners are in control of their lives, and are free to happily walk their own nonconformist paths without feeling the need to conform to society's expectations. The freedom that comes from that mindset is what makes this book so inspiring.
I especially loved the relatable stories mentioned throughout the book. The stories went well with the lessons in each chapter, and included the story of the youngest girl to sail around the world alone, the story of the guy who took 52 different jobs a week for a year, and the story of the guy who had to resort to pumping poop as a job until he could make a living with his passion, all of which all resonated with me.

I believe the Art of Self-Directed Learning would resonate with any young adult wanting to learn how to navigate life, their education, defining their passion, and how to make a living doing passionate work. (Which is almost everyone!)

A waste of my time and money

Perhaps I had the wrong expectations for this book, but I read it from cover to cover hoping to find something fresh and original, yet found nothing new. I would have liked to find a sort of "blueprint" to guide and help me succeed at self-directed learning. Instead, the book had a more motivational/inspirational focus that I honestly didn't need.

"My Bible" For All My Writing Needs and Grammatical Error Corrections

When I was in college, The Gregg Reference Manual was referred to by the professors as "The Bible". Just like the title says, it covers all the bases for all your writing needs at least on the business level of Style, Grammar, Usage, and Formatting. The book gets better with each edition adding new things to keep up with the technology of today's world. My favorite section of the book it the words that sound alike but spelled differently. Whenever I am not sure which word to use, like "Affect" and "Effect", I head to the GRM. If I am not sure on term papers or reports, I head to the GRM. It is a great book for secretaries and administrative assistants. They have added new sections to keep up with computer usage as in my days of high school and college, we were using manual and electric typewriters and computers are now the basic source for typing correspondence, reports, and all the computer software used in today's business world. I will always buy the latest edition, even though earlier editions, they only change a few words or things, but this is the best reference book to have in your library like a dictionary and thesaurus is.

Simply the best

I teach business writing in industry and government, and I recommend the Gregg Manual enthusiastically in all my programs, at every level. There are a lot of wonderful resources out there, including Albert Joseph's classic EXECUTIVE GUIDE TO GRAMMAR, that can help you understand what makes our language tick, but there is nothing like Gregg when you need an authoritative answer NOW to a specific (even picayune) question. And it's striking to see how EXCITED seemingly well-balanced people from all walks of life can be when they first get their hands on Gregg. After reading the other reviews here, I am even preparing to do the unthinkable and buy a new copy - just to see what the new edition has to say about computers (my copy is a little old...).

Praise for Gregg Reference Manual

The Gregg Reference Manual is the most thorough and readable handbook I've found in thirty-years-plus of teaching writing. As the author of an online grammar resource, I get hundreds of questions about writing every week, and I find myself reaching for GRM over and over again to help me define a grammatical point or resolve an issue of English usage. I find GRM very easy to use (unlike an earlier reviewer on this page); its index is enormous and you don't waste time being bounced from one cross-reference to another. The organization is admirably simple: the section on letter-writing, for example, begins with an extensive section on formatting, and then proceeds to the business of what you put on the envelope, how to use return addresses, etc., right down to the letter's closing. The book contains an abundance of examples, complete with acceptable ranges of formality (with a tip of the hat to what is still acceptable but somewhat too formal by today's tastes). All of this information is nicely, thoroughly indexed with references to paragraph numbers and pages where appropriate. GRM also contains up-to-date advice on altering templates in today's software packages (for stationery, etc.) to individual and corporate needs. William Sabin's even-handed style is ideal for this kind of text; he will state a grammatical rule concisely and then give just enough illustrations to make the rule stick in the mind. Where there is disagreement among other style books, Sabin provides for those differences and often suggests a commonsense resolution of disputes. But GRM is more than just a compilation of rules: Sabin gets into the nitty-gritty of writing, of style, and all users, at whatever level, will write with more economy and energy --whether they're writing a memo to the boss or an academic research paper -- if they keep GRM handy. (The spiral-bound edition is handy for this purpose: you can use that spiral ring to grab it off the shelf and then it lies nice and flat on the desktop.)

About the Author
Frank M. Carrano is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Rhode Island. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates. Walter Savitch received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969. Since that time he has been on the faculty at the University of California at San Diego and is currently a Professor of Computer Science and director of the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science. Professor Savitch's research areas include complexity theory, formal language theory, computational linguistics, and the development of computer science education materials. In addition to writing numerous research articles and involvement in other editorial projects, he has written a number of well-known computer science textbooks, including Pascal, Ada, and C++ CS1 and CS2 textbooks.

It's a Book About Data Structures and Abstractions with Java

The concepts are pretty well presented and the examples do a good job at reinforcing each topic. My only complaint is that there does seem to be a bit of information missing. I'm not sure if they expect you to remember everything you've ever learned in past Java classes, or if I never learned some of the concepts in depth from said Java classes. My professor supplies his own supplementary materials to go with each chapter due past complaints about the book's lack of explanation on key concepts. Still, It's a fine book with a lot of great information that is logically mapped out.

Examples were often unclear and the writing style was hard to follow. The online videos you get are helpful but the book itself was of very little use to me. My classmates and my professor unanimously agreed.

Received outstanding support from Wiley with regards to accessing online resources. Content is up to par with other of Panek's work. Looking forward to his next book (698).

Chapters, expectations, review questions are all reasonable and well organized. The ebook sample only gives a short section on the assessment exam, but I think its a great resource for anyone to use for exam prep.

It is a classical good book to Operative Dentistry. Although Professor Pickard passed away, his book can keep "Eigth Edition". I just read the first part of it only but I will keep on finishing it. I'm just the Ninth edition. Much more concise! It's just irresistable to have a look of it and collect of it. Waiting for the new edition, too.
