An incredible jewel

The book is a written account of an oral transmission of the "Vijnana Bhairava" by the great Kashmir Shaivite teacher and saint Swami Lakshmanjoo. Included in the back of the book is a CD of mp3 files of the transmission that runs about 7 hours. It is an amazing blessing to have this opportunity to actually listen to Swami Lakshmanjoo. The recordings were made some time ago, before the advent of easy digital recording, so the volume varies and there is sometimes ambient noise, but this should be overlooked and the incredible gift of getting to actually listen to Swami Lakshmanjoo's voice and teaching embraced fully. There is such love and warmth and humor and clarity in Swami Lakshmanjoo's voice!

As for the content of the teachings, it is deep. Comparing this work to Jaideva Singh's excellent translation "Vijnanabhariva Divine Consciousness," I find this one more powerful: it feels like it is coming from a true master. Singh's well-footnoted books are always a treasure trove of information about Kashmir Shaivism (and it is interesting to note that Singh often references Swami Lakshmanjoo--I believe Singh was a student) but with Swami Lakshmanjoo's oral transmission, the clarity of a true master who knows the Truth behind the words of the teachings shines brightly. There is the sense of listening to someone who has taught these exercises to many students--who know how they work--leaving the listener-reader with the ability to more fully put them into practice. Transmission is here for those open to it.

For those with no understanding of the specific terms used in Kashmir Shaivism, I would suggest checking out one of Jaideva Singh's wonderful translation works--either "Shiva Sutras" or "Vijnanabhairva"--both of which have excellent introductory chapters detailing the landscape of Kashmir Shaivism.

About the Author
Michael Kort is professor of social science at Boston University's College of General Studies. He received his B.A. in history from Johns Hopkins University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Russian history from New York University. He is the author of several books on the history of the Soviet Union and the Cold War, including "The Soviet Colossus: History and Aftermath" (sixth edition, 2006) and "The Columbia Guide to the Cold War" (1998).

Very fine

As I read this book, I wished that all history books were written like this: straightforward, well-organized, just literary enough to be pleasant and engaging.

A few dozen centuries of Russian history, all within the span of 250 pages: A remarkable achievement really. I was left with the impression that all the major incidents, movements, personalities, etc. were all covered in only as much detail as I really wanted. Yet he found time for a few paragraphs each on Tchaikowsky, Pushkin and Dostoyevsky, among others.

For anyone interested in learning what happened in that vast area from the days BCE through Putin, without getting too bogged down in the mud (!), this volume is excellent.

Highest marks.

Very informative.

A Brief History of Russia betrays the title word "brief" at least in the depths of its content. I read it for an overview and ended up with an education. Each step in Russia's history revealed how it became the country we grew up hearing about.
I read with empathy about a people who rarely witnessed true freedom. Through it I appreciated yet more the liberty I have experienced.

About the Author
Iceberg Slim, also known as Robert Beck, was born in Chicago in 1918 and was initiated into the life of the pimp at age eighteen. He briefly attended the Tuskegee Institute but dropped out to return to the streets of the South Side, where he remained, pimping until he was forty-two. After several stints in jail he decided to give up the life and turned to writing. Slim folded his life into the pages of seven books based on his life. Magic and Passion

I love Once Upon a Time and was happy when the graphic novel was announced. One thing I love about graphic novels is that it can expand on the universe and tell more stories the show is not able to do. This graphic novel does just that. It steps into Fairy Tale land precurse and tells the story of the Huntsman's loyalty to Snow White and what he is willing to do to protect her and her love ones. The art work is amazing. It is full of details and the colors help set the mood for the overall story. It is a quick read. Took me around 30 mins or so to complete. Without spoiling anything there is some plot points that make me wonder if this is going to be cannon with the show or going slightly AU. Either way it was a delightful read. Wish it was a little longer but overall good to add to your Once Upon a Time collection. Can't wait for season 3.

Strong Shadow but Inconsistent art

Despite what the introduction says about how accessible the story is, I can't imagine anyone who doesn't watch Once Upon A Time picking this graphic novel up. Hopefully for Marvel and ABC, the Once core audience is rabid enough that they will pick up all associated media -- especially media that seems to fit into the Canon of the show, as this story does.

The first thing the creators did right was set the story completely in the Enchanted Forest and tell it in chronological order. Switching back and forth with Storybrooke and bouncing in time is a comic book trademark as much as a Once/Lost/etc trait, but I think in would have worked against the story here. The second thing they did right was make this a Canon story -- from the executive producers introduction, it's clear this is a story they had developed during season one but unable to fit into the constraints of the season ... and as much as fans love and miss The Huntsman and Red Riding Hood, the show has moved on from their stories. The story is paced well and the dialogue at least rings true to the actors, especially the dialogue for the Evil Queen (somewhat less so for Red, sad to say). If the Once producers and Marvel can continue to coordinate their stories and let these stand-alone graphic novels fill in the gaps in story for the secondary characters like the Huntsman and Red (and the werewolf tribe Red is exiled from), the series might just work.

The thing that works against this book is the wildly variable artwork. On the one hand, you have a chapter by the still-phenomenal-after-all-these-years Michael Wm. Kaluta. Visually, that was my favorite chapter of the book. Unfortunately, the chapter art doesn't all mesh -- chapter two in particular doesn't fit or flow with the rest of the book's look. It's not that the art is bad, it's that the sudden change in look threw me out of the story. I'm not sure what the intent was of having multiple art styles telling the same continuous story.

Still the art is a minor quibble in a story that was fun to read and complementing the source material.
