Thought it leaves some loose ends its pretty good and gives you the grounds to look for complementary info plus it advices more literature on the topic for further reading. The Best Baxter Book Yet

I have read all of the books Karen Kingsbury has written about the Baxter Family. John comes to a decision about his relationship with Elaine. Ashley tries to keep the family happy and together. Katy and Dayne struggle with their seperation. Luke and Reagan try to keep their marriage together. All of other Baxters (and some of the Flannigans) are featured. An excellent book for everyone one, but especially for Kingsbury fans. The story of the Baxters is winding to a close. Karen Kingsbury has made the entire family seem real to us. The only bad news: Only one book remaining for those of us who love the Baxters!

This is Going to Hurt....

I've figured out something about Karen Kingsbury's storytelling skill. She is a master in foreshadowing. As I read Someday, I fell into that page turning trance that I tend to suffer from when opening one of her novels. With each chapter, I know something is going to happen that will rock the world of the characters and I somehow want to get to them to warn them, help them avoid it, because I've seen what Karen lets happen within the pages of her novels, and I know this isn't going to be good. Okay, yes, on one hand it's great because her characters grow and change...but the process. Aye-Yi-Yi!

Karen Kingsbury writes reality. I have a tendency, when life is really good, to look over my shoulder wondering if something lurks. Kingsbury incorporates that sense of impending upheaval into her books. My oldest daughter can't sit and read Kingsbury. She has to get up and pace on occasion.

If you haven't read her, and you like to be on the emotional edge of your seat....you might want to look into her. Blessedly she adds much hope to her stories and then pours on some grace. Someday is a tense continuation of the Baxter family saga. If you love the characters you will go for quite a ride.

wonderful, exciting, a joy to read

This is a fascinating translation to dip into, and once you do you will not want to emerge. If ever the idea that a book can transport you back with a sense of immediacy to the time the writer was composing it is accurate, this is the one. One can almost feel Herodotus putting implement to parchment to write these words. The book is by turns humorous, outlandish, informative and puzzling. The introduction by Holland creates an infectious sense of excitement, as apparently he was enamored of the book as a young man. It gave me the idea of perhaps passing it by my 11 year old to see what he makes of it. There is in fact something of the child sense of wonder in Herodotus and Holland captures it wonderfully. Don't miss this one.

Most informative and entertaining edition of the Histories

I've read the Histories probably 4 or 5 times. This read is the most informative and interesting of them all. I love the copious footnotes and the normal English translation. I highly recommend this edition for the repeat or first time reader of the Histories.

The Father Of History.

Herodotus was born in Halicarnassus and lived from 484 until 429 B.C. These dates are approximate.

The History of Herodotus is divided into nine 'books' (we would call it chapters) each with a name of one of the nine Muses:
Cleio, Euterpe, Thaleia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Ourania and Calliope. Their names were given at random without a link to the content of each book.
Scholars believe that it wasn't Herodotus who used these names but that it was done probably by
an unknown copyist from the Hellenistic period (+- 300-200 B.C.).

Many critics say that there is no leading thread running through the nine books and that their digressions are used haphazardly with little explanation of historical events.
Those critics are not entirely wrong. Herodotus is fond of legends, myths and anecdotes ( in book 2
for instance we read an Egyptian horror story ) and let's face it; the Greeks themselves were fond of these things. Herodotus must have been a very popular writer in his time.
Modern historians though are not likely to use such things with minor importance in their scientific works.

There is a leading thread however but you have to simplify things a little. You could summarize Herodotus' work in three steps. 1. How Persia becomes a military power. 2. The conquest of Egypt by Persia. 3. Two attempts to conquer Greece and why they failed.
The first attempt fails in the battle of Marathon (490 B.C.). The second attempt is more complex but takes a turn in favor of the Greeks during the sea-battle of Salamis where the Persian fleet is almost destroyed. Legend ( or historical fact ? ) has it that Aeschylus - one of the three Tragedy Poets - participated in that battle. ( 480 B.C. ).

Herodotus proofs that literature from Antiquity can be entertaining.

About the Author
As much as any writer, Gardner Fox helped create the tone and feel of the Batman stories of the 1960s. Fox was an attorney who began his prolific and innovative second career as a writer in the late 1930s on Batman and went on to create such Golden Age classics as the original Flash, Hawkman, Starman, Doctor Fate, and the Justice Society of America. His influence extended throughout the 1950s and 1960s when, until his retirement from DC Comics in 1968, he created and/or wrote such memorable features as the Justice League of America, Adam Strange, the Atom, Hawkman, and, of course, Batman, all under the auspices of legendary comics editor Julius Schwartz. Until his death in 1986, Gardner Fox continued writing comics and novels. He published over 100 books in numerous genres, some under the pseudonyms of Jefferson Cooper and Bart Sommers, as well as many fantasy novels under his own name.

Classic stories of the Justice League.

These stories highlight the thinking of the Silver Age, with the first outings of the Justice League of America. These stories often follow the formula originally set up by the Justice Society in the Golden Age, where the group splits up to take care of different aspects of the threat. Unlike what would happen in a few years time, Batman and Superman did not appear on the covers for these stories even if in the story itself, and sometimes might be doing something else so won't be in the story. When Batman hits the tv screen, all that changes. Gardner Fox does his usual brialliant job with the stories. In 26 pages he is telling a story that nowadays would probably take 5 issues and be issued in its own trade. No decompression here!

The Amazon listing isn't correct for this, giving the hardback contents instead of the trade paperback contents. It does have Brave and Bold 28-30, but only Justice League 1-8, not 1-16. A Wonderful Trip to a Simpler Time

Obviously your enjoyment of any of these Silver Age volumes mainly hinges on if you like the way comics of the 60s were written. It's not my favorite decade to read from, but most of the stories in this collection surpassed my expectations and I really loved reading this. The first story ever is the famous Starro story line, which is as awesome as people say. For people who prefer art over story then this is definitely for you. The art was really consistent and the colors just pop off the page. There's so much hope and fun radiating off these characters that I couldn't help but get sucked in with them. I read with a smile on my face the whole time.

One of the more surprising aspects I found about this book is the fact that whenever I'd start an issue I thought it would be very silly and wouldn't appeal to me, however, after reading a few pages I'd just get sucked in and I'll be hooked until the end of the issue. I don't know what it is about these stories, but I've fallen in love with this era of the Justice League. I will say that like any comic there are some really good issues and a few that are okay in this collection.

Another thing I really loved about this beginning, is the fact that the whole roster is rarely used. Characters have their own titles, so if Gardner Fox (the writer) doesn't want to use someone he'll just say they're busy on a case. In fact, Superman and Batman have a good number of issues where they don't appear. Superman is either off in Space or in another dimension while Batman is on a case. Because every modern Justice League comic always had Batman and Superman on the forefront and used them in every way possible to promote the team I found it very refreshing to see these two big characters take a step back for the other League members to bond and grow as a team.

Overall I really enjoyed this volume of Silver Age Justice League of America stories, and I think this is a must buy for any die hard JL fan.

Awesome! You can not beat these collected volumes, if you remember the Showcase Presents collections, which were all black & white on cheaper newsprint, these are all COLOR! on better quality paper. Highly recommend.
