To many fairy tales in a music composing tutorial book.

Have to say there are too many fairy tales in this book, and the "real stuff" is pretty short. One quick example, It takes 27% of the contents to end the long, nearly useless prefaces, forewards and introductions. If you are a well-educated musician or some amateur want to get serious, skip this book and save your money for a better one.

Get up and running!

As a composer and teacher of composition, this book is invaluable. It covers a ton of useful information, and does so in a concise and very easy to understand manner. Each new topic is presented and thoroughly prepares you for the next step. I have already used it with one student who made tremendous progress just over the weekend. The clear explanations of how melodies and harmonies are related is brilliant, and got my student to experiment with triads, inversions, seventh chords, and ninth chords in her melody harmonizations: a new world was opened up for her. Her music jumped off of the page and came to life thanks to the confidence, new ideas and harmonic vocabulary that this book imparted in a short time. Many thanks to Todd Rice for putting this book together! I look forward to using it with many of my students.

Think The Better -- Of Wasting Your Money

I was looking for a book of puzzles and exercises that would help me cultivate my capacity for creative and non-linear thinking. Unfortunately, the questions in this book are nothing more than intensely annoying. Let me start by citing one of the better puzzles. Though not labeled as such, it is a riddle: What three-letter word completes the first word [listed below]and start the second? DON CAR. You may have come across this riddle in childhood-- the answer is "key" because "key" added to "don" makes the word "donkey" and also a key starts a car. More typical of this book is the question, "Where are the Pyrenees?" The "correct" answer is "Just above the 'Pair O'Shins.'" Or perhaps you would like to ponder the trivia question, "Who was the tallest president of the United States?" The "correct" answer to that one is "Dwight D. Eiffel Tower." And here is one of the lateral thinking scenarios Outstanding Lateral Thinking Puzzles offers for your contemplation: Why did a bottle of wine jump in value a thousandfold overnight? The answer to that one is, "The bottle was signed by all four member os the Beatles and immediately became valuable as a collector's item the night John Lennon died." Need I say more? I hope not because I have already wasted time looking through this book and carrying it to my recycle bin. I can't waste another second reviewing it further.

So much fun!!

This book is so much fun! I had originally bought it for my 11-year-old son to expose him to something new. He ended up being incredibly good at it right off the bat, and I totally stunk!! But now, I have caught onto the concept of thinking outside the box and we have so much fun working out the scenarios. Very entertaining and challenging.

I have read through a few leadership books already and will say that this book is pretty similar to other books on the same topic. What it does differently is that it simplifies all the points of becoming a leader in to short concise paragraphs. You can easily read through this book in 20 mins and pick up a lot of information as there is no fluff in it at all. Downside is that its a little short on content for such a big topic, but I think this will be rectified on later editions.
