About the Author

Sanjay Mishra is a certified Oracle database administrator with more than ten years of IT experience. He has been involved in the design, architecture, and implementation of many mission-critical and decision support databases. He has worked extensively in the areas of database architecture, database management, backup / recovery, performance tuning, Oracle Parallel Server, and parallel execution. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, and a Master of Engineering degree in Systems Science and Automation. He is the coauthor of Oracle Parallel Processing and Oracle SQL Loader: The Definitive Guide (both published by O'Reilly & Associates). Presently, he works as a database architect at Dallas Based i2 Technologies, and can be reached at sanjay_mishra@i2.com.

Alan Beaulieu has been designing, building, and implementing custom database applications for over 13 years. He currently runs his own consulting company that specializes in designing Oracle databases and supporting services in the fields of Financial Services and Telecommunications. In building large databases for both OLTP and OLAP environments, Alan utilizes such Oracle features as Parallel Query, Partitioning, and Parallel Server. Alan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Operations Research from the Cornell University School of Engineering. Paid for itself in 10 minutes

A clear explaination of how to use multiple nested views has saved the day. I can now run a single query on my large table (the table has 83 Million rows in it) and it completes by in a few hours. I have enjoyed reading it and becoming more experienced in SQL. In the past I would use Perl/DBI to access the database but now I do it through sqlplus because of the large datasets I am working with. I wish I bought this book a loong time ago.

What can you do with Oracle SQL?

Half of this 450 page book surveys basic SQL, and the other half is on features Oracle added to SQL in versions 9i and especially 10g. I bought the book because I believed the title, and the reviews here that said it was an excellent reference. But, to quote one of its authors, "This book is NOT a reference manual, and it is NOT an administrator's guide". It's an overview of SQL only. It is not an introduction; nor can it be used, reference book-fashion, all by itself.

So for my purposes, I was quite disappointed. But the book has some utility, in its explanations of what can be done with Oracle SQL. Especially in the explanations of analytic functions, regular expressions, and XML. It's like a series of magazine articles, with discussion and examples.

The book has some weaknesses:

* The index is very skimpy and incomplete. This is what you'd expect actually, in a book that isn't ever meant to be referred back to.

* The focus on SQL is diluted and inconsistent. For example, there is an explanation on how to set up partitioning. Another section compares Oracle's implementation of regular expressions to Perl's . Sometimes background and comparisons are present, sometimes they're not.

* There isn't much explanation of *why* you'd want to do some of the *whats* that can be done. Yes, it's possible to build classes and objects into a database, but why do it in SQL instead of Java? (Of course the *hows* would be quite inadequate, if this were a how-to book).

* There is too much explanation of how things used to be done in 8i. That version was five years old back when this edition was published. 8i shouldn't take up more than a paragraph or three in a book that purports to cover 9i and 10g.

In summary, if you don't read trade magazines, and you don't care to spend your time on Oracle websites and forums, and you know you won't have access to 11g anytime soon, you may find this book a decent (altho somewhat pricey) way to broaden your horizons of what you can do with Oracle SQL.

Previously, he was manager of New Media at Passport Online and director of New Business Development and Strategy for Infinet Communications. He writes on e-business for Marketing Magazine and is a frequent guest expert on Canada's Cable Pulse 24 Money Morning television program.

Joel Aufgang is CTO for Agile.Net and an early adaptor and pioneer of XML and C# in the production of complex Web sites and systems. Prior to joining Agile.Net, he worked on many Web and software projects in both Canada and internationally and cofounded Monkeys and Typewriters, an XML and Web development consulting firm.

Isobel Raggett has been involved in Web site design and development since the beginning of the industry, and has been at the forefront of adapting lightweight methodologies to Web site development. She has worked on many Web projects, as general manager of Agile.Net and production manager for Passport Online, as well as developed her own popular fashion site.

Estimating the time and the costs of Web projects has been my obsession for more than five years. Starting with wild guesstimates and little success, I was quickly attracted to the analysis practices of the Rational Process. I spent weeks with customers doing Use Cases and Activity Diagrams, trying to define the scope of a project. However, these specifications told me nothing about the work effort involved and led to huge fights with customers over the changes they inevitably wanted.

Three years ago I went to the Software Expo in San Jose and heard Martin Fowler talk about a new set of practices called XP, or Extreme Programming. I was hooked. XP let me acknowledge the futility of estimation. It taught me about the interconnectedness of price, time, scope, and quality and about the importance of letting the customer make continuous trade-offs between the four. XP changed the rules of how I, as a project manager, engaged with customers and overnight it improved my customer relationships and my bottom line.

If estimation was my obsession, then development was my curse. Every project seemed to be going fine and then stalled at 90 percent. It would take us three months to do 90 percent of the work and six months to do the last 10 percent. Once completed, the sites we were building were a nightmare to maintain, and I lost many good programmers who would rather abandon ship than babysit a mass of unintelligible, brittle code. Developing sites in iterations and using unit tests made a lot of sense but didn't translate naturally to Web development. While the pure coding server-side issues melded well with XP, we had client-side issues, graphic design issues, and serious conflicts in trying to use a practice meant for object-oriented systems on inherently non-object-oriented Web page architecture. If Web projects were going to use XP, then XP would have to change and so would the way Web sites were structured and developed.

Over the last two years, we have experimented with practices to get the most out of XP in a Web development environment. We have extended our practices to include graphic designers, interface programmers, copywriters, and the rest of the diverse team that goes into building a Web site. We have developed new design patterns for Web site creation using XML, Cascading Style Sheets, and XSLT to impose an architecture that better supports continuous integration and the separation of content, graphical design, and functionality.

We highly recommend that readers of this book first look at Kent Beck's original XP book, Extreme Programming Explored, to see the origins of the XP practices described here and to better see where his and our practices differ.

Learn the new ways of web site development.

This book is for both professional web-site development companies and for the customers who would like to order web-site development from a contractor. The book offers new way of developing web projects. The mode of operation is based on the famous methodology called "Extreme Programming" (XP). Until publication of this book, all of the non-compilation books on XP have come from those who were involved in its birth. This publication is the first title from the "second generation" of XP practitioners.
This book is self-essential. However, if you would like to know more about economic and spiritual aspects of XP, digest the "Extreme Programming Explained" by Kent Beck. Another valuable resource is "Testing Extreme Programming" by Lisa Crispin & Tip House. It exhibits valuable web testing strategies.
While the authors mostly rely on XP manifesto, they have adjusted the methodology to best fit their own needs. For example, they offer so-called zero-iteration, which sets up the framework, but have no business value to the customer. The parents of XP discourage this approach in "Extreme Programming Installed" by Ron Jeffries, Ann Anderson and Chet Hendrickson. Who are right? You decide.

This book's premise is an interesting one: Does XP work for web projects, and if so then how does one go about implementing it? The authors are up front about the first question in the opening to Chapter 1: "Sort of" they say. The book's entire content struck me as a continuation of that statement.

The book attempts to be a bit too general in many aspects: there's a lot of high-level coverage of XP tenets without much utility specific to web development. The general coverage of XP is nice, but you'll find better content in other works; however, the authors didn't intend for this to be a seminal work on XP anyway, so that's not a big issue.

Several sections do provide good information specific to XP in web development, such as Chapter 8 (Graphics Design) and its emphasis on how to wrap customers in to the process early. Another example would be the discussion in Chapter 11 (Planning) on how the "customer" in web development differs a bit from what XP usually considers a "customer."

There's also a lot of good discussion at a high level on how the use of XML vice static HTML as data can greatly benefit the development process. There are good overviews of XML in general, XSLT from 30,000 feet, and a nice blurb on how the Tidy tool can help you keep out of trouble.

The downside of this book is that too often it stretches too far to make the connection between XP and web development. It's not detailed enough as a reference for implementing XP practices, and it doesn't do a good enough job of tying web development into XP for those looking to solve that problem.

The book is concise and well-written, but that doesn't make up for its fundamental weaknesses.

Biting off more than they can chew

To get straight to the point, I was disappointed with this book. The book opens with great promise on how XP is going to change our world and revolutionize programming projects for the web. However, Wallace, Raggett, and Aufgang end up trying to bite off more than they could chew in a 150-page book.
First, the authors assume you already know a great deal about extreme programming, which I did not prior to picking up this book. To their credit, they do refer you to Kent Beck's Extreme Programming Explored, recommending you to peruse it before reading their book. Unfortunately, this reference occurs in the Preface, and could easily be missed by readers who go straight to Chapter 1. Without this background, it's not hard to get lost - for example, the authors refer to CRC's without explaining what the acronym is or what it means - I had to check the index; indeed, CRC's are discussed (albeit briefly) much later in the book.
Not to say that there aren't positives - I enjoyed Part II, the discussion of how to integrate XP practices into a development shop. But, the authors just do not go into enough detail, and leave me wanting more. You feel that this book could have either been a 20-page paper or a 500-page book, but not something in between. A 20-page paper would have simply highlighted the differences between XP development for non-web projects versus web projects. A 500-page book would have gone into detail on a number of concepts discussed in this book. But, this slimmer volume goes in between these two choices, and ends up not really doing an adequate job of either highlighting the differences or going into a good amount of detail about XP practices.
Part III, a discussion of XML, was an awkward insertion into the text. The book goes from general management discussion to highly technical without warning, and you ask yourself within a few pages, "What the heck just happened here?" One minute they're talking about the importance of comfy chairs, and the next they're discussing recursive nested structures. It left my head spinning, and I'm not a technical wallflower. It almost seems like the authors had a 120-page book, thought it was too slim, and had to stuff an extra 30 pages in somehow.
This book whetted my appetite, and I'm now interested in learning more. Maybe I'll take the authors' advice and read Kent Beck's book to get the detailed information I'm looking for, but did not get from Extreme Programming for Web Projects.

About the Author

Bradley Cantrell is an associate professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, USA,�and design researcher at Invivia whose work focuses on the role of computation and media in environmental and ecological design. Professor Cantrell received his BSLA from the University of Kentucky and his MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is the author of the ASLA award-winning book Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture and Modeling the Environment.

Justine Holzman is a landscape researcher and visiting assistant professor at the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University, USA. She received a BA in Landscape Architecture from the University of California Berkeley and an MLA from the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture. Her current research recognizes the inherent responsive capabilities of landscape through its materiality and work in ceramics and digital fabrication has been exhibited across the United States.

Rise Up and Salute the Sun

After reading the first story "The Little Girl and the Sphinx" I felt like I had just had a personal conversation with GOD. The message was so simple a 7 yr old girl with a pure heart understood how to be a good person and live your life on the path of truth. I had to read it again almost immediately as I didn't want to miss any part of the message. This story drew me inside the conversation and it became my dialogue, and when a book or story can have that affect on the reader then that book is a quality read. Found the story and poetry to be a manual for living a conscious based life.

For those that are searching for truth, Suzy Kassem's "Rise Up and Salute The Sun" is the perfect guide in pointing readers towards the right direction to this life long endeavor. For those that are not yet seeking, "Rise Up and Salute The Sun" will do as the title suggests - awaken. Not only will it awaken but it will also plant seeds. I have been following the writings of Suzy Kassem online for a couple of years now after stumbling upon her "Style Is King" blog and will say that every piece she has written is timeless, relevant and effective and the same rings true for the words contained in the poems, short stories and parables in the book. What is most admirable about Suzy and her writings is the strong conviction in her words as well as her selflessness to share such deep knowledge and wisdom freely. Most importantly as a voice of our generation, her messages flow straight from the heart. In this upside down world we live in, her words lead, uplift and light the way to a better existence, on a personal, local and international scale.

Really made me think

While at school, I heard this writer speak, and was blown away. I borrowed a copy of this book from my professor, and it was both one of the most enlightening and disturbing things I have read. Disturbing in that it made me look at some of my beliefs in a completely different way, and question my way of thinking. This collection of short stories, poems, and thoughts from the author was a profound influence in my live, and I can not keep from telling others about it.

A half-way good biography.

In the beginning I thought the book was great and was enjoying reading it immensely. However, I thought the author's take on Harrison's LPs especially those after All Things Must Pass done between 1973 -79 were way of the mark. It seems that the author equates good song writing with chart success. I believe George Harrison wrote some of his best material during this period. No, they weren't chart toppers or big sellers but they had a beauty and a honesty that you don't find very often. If I was to compare the biggest selling album (studio wise) of all time Michael Jackson's Thriller to say Living in the Material World, I know which one I'd pick as having more depth, more soul and more melody.

The greatness of a song or album should have nothing to do with its sales but with its beauty, with its heart and how it moves you. This is not to say that a great selling song or album can't have this, of course not. But this author seems hell bent on knocking George Harrison down.

George Harrison was also great as a producer and didn't need the likes of Quincy Jones to put sugar on his compositions.

Don't get me wrong Graeme Thomson's book is great as a historical account on George Harrison's life but on a musical one it lacks tremendously. It seems too ready to criticise anything that Harrison did post All Things Must Pass and accusing him of not being creative in his song writing. At one point, speaking of George's 1981 LP, he says "Somewhere In England was a weak, rather ugly-sounding record." Total nonsense. It may not have been up there with the latest trends in music but that is no reflection on the quality of the songs or their delivery. According to the author George Harrison only made one truly suburb album during his solo career.

One slight annoyance I found in the book was the bad editing. There were a few, here and there, where the wording was incorrect. Simple mistakes but the editors should have picked them up. One example, on page 385 the year dates gets mixed up, where it's supposed to be 1998 it is written as 1988.

A funny mistake which has nothing to do with editing was the reference to the new millennium starting in the year 2000. The new millennium actually started on 01-01-2001. But this was a common mistake by many. I guess people liked the sound of a nice round number. But simple maths explain the fact.

I would recommend the book only to those looking for an account of George Harrison's more negative and short comings in life pre- and post-Beatles. But if you're looking for a biography that's more even based and that deals better with Harrison's music and talents, then I would look elsewhere as there a many books dealing with that.

It's a half-way good biography but misses its mark. I found it dwelling too much on the negative and don't believe it really shows enough of the positive. And no, I don't have illusions that George Harrison was perfect and without faults, I'm sure he had many, but this book is hell bent on dwelling on them. It's a shame because otherwise it would have been a much better portrayal of the man.

Journey Through a Sour Milk Sea!

Graeme Thomson's GEORGE HARRISON, BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR chronicles the life and musical times of the legendary musician/singer/songwriter/seeker of truth. There have been a number of Harrison bios published over the years; this is the latest. A 2015 Overlook Omnibus release, Thomson's door-stopper of a book - 447 pages - is the first Harrison bio I've read.

Thomson's book takes Harrison from his Liverpool youth through the madness of Beatlemania and subsequent career as a solo artist, concert producer, film producer, reclusive gardener to his death from cancer in November 2001. Though the book hits all the biographical marks, it concentrates heavily on Harrison's spiritual life and his conflicted search for meaning.

To be honest, I found GEORGE HARRISON hard slogging. GH was a complicated, contradictory individual who experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows life has to offer so you have to give him credit for just surviving. Yet, his Krishna connection, based on my reading of the book, didn't bring him peace and contentment; the book relating endless problems, squabbles, retreats from reality to his beloved garden, etc. And when you consider Thomson's 'faint praise' treatment of Harrison's music, what's left to enjoy or marvel at about the man and his music? In the end, you're left with the rather glum portrait of a filthy rich musician who wrote some ok songs but whose own character flaws kept him from realizing his goal of nirvana. Really!?!

While Thomson's book told me everything I could possibly want to know - and not want to know - about George Harrison, it was overall a joyless expose. Given the joy Harrison gave the world in his music, dry Liverpool witticisms and charity work, by book's end, you're saddened he never achieved his goal as espoused in the lyric: "Give me love, give me love, give me peace on earth..." Your call, folks.

When He Was Fab

This is quite a well researched book albiet limited through having no direct access to the main players in Harrison’s life such as his immediate family, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The author has however quoted them from various sources such as newspapers, magazines and documentaries. His other sources are from former associates including those who played alongside of him post Beatles. It is a book where you turn the pages and look forward to the next page. It drops in intensity towards the last 50 or so pages but overall you will learn some things – such as before he died George was made a citizen of Switzerland to avoid the Taxman.

We learn of his warmth, his infidelities and also his strong work ethic. How he and Eric Clapton had this unusual friendship following George’s wife Patty leaving him for Eric. While George was seen in some ways not bothered by this and was relieved the marriage was over, there was more to it than that. He was seen to be wanting revenge tit for tat with women who had been in Clapton’s life. The upshot of this book is a better understanding of this complex character George Harrison and what made him, what defined him and how he came to leave such a big mark on the world of popular music.

George comes across as a complex man trapped by the fame he and the other Beatle members had sought and found peace through eastern religion and philosophies. He was frustrated by his fame and with the murder of John Lennon, people seeking his autograph and the attack on him in his house. It was something that he never psychologically completely recovered from.
