About the Author
Carol Dahl is currently a professor of Mineral Economics and director of the CSM/IFP Joint International Degree Program in Petroleum Economics and Management, in the Division of Economics and Business at the Colorado School of Mines. She received her BA in Economics from the University of Wisconsin and her PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota. Dahl has supervised numerous PhD students, published articles, and traveled to more than 80 countries pursuing her interests in modeling international energy markets. She is a senior fellow and council member of the American Association for Energy Economics, as well as a member of the International Association for Energy Economics and the Editorial Board for The Energy Journal.

Excellent examples, great for use in an energy economics or business class

I was TA for a class, Energy Economics (ENNEC 484W), during the Fall 2006 semester at Penn State University. The professor for the class introduced Dahl's book into the class's curriculum during the Fall semester of 2005. The class covered the first 8 chapters of Dahl's book which included economic topics on perfect competition (explanation of supply and demand), natural monopoly, deregulation, dominant firm model, market structures, and externalities. Each of these economic concepts are fully developed using an example from energy markets. The examples are agreeably the most fitting for each subject. She discusses the deregulation of the electricity market for deregulation, coal markets for perfect competition, and OPEC for the dominant firm chapter. Each chapter is developed with clearly derived numerical examples and useful charts that develop an intuitive understanding of the amount of natural gas, petroleum, coal, etc. reserves in the world and their geographical distribution. I recommend this book for any class that deals with any aspect of energy markets. Since our class was rooted more in the economic theory of energy markets, we were able to use the first half of the text, in addition to extra material such as journal articles, to satisfy our objectives. All of the students in the class gave the book great reviews saying that it was the perfect aid to understanding lecture.

Good for Graduate and Beyond, NOT Undergrad.

The book was purchased for a 3-level Energy Economics course at a highly respected private college. Has some useful background information and charts, but overall, is geared more for graduate students, academics, and mostly for business owners who are already decently versed in medium to upper-level economic concepts. Tends to be dry and can be even dull at points. 3/5 for my purposes, i can see it being 4/5 for upper levels.

Useful, but only if some previuous background

The book contains an economics approach to international energy markets. It does provide some background into energy issues in order to explain the functioning of the markets using economic models. As a result, it is mainly useful from an academic perspective. It is not an introductory book. In order to go through it you need background both in economics and energy.

About the Author

Daniel S. Parrott teaches navigation, seamanship, and Bridge Resource Management at Maine Maritime Academy and sails aboard the academy’s training ships State of Maine and schooner Bowdoin. Parrott holds a U.S. Coast Guard license for Master of Oceans, Motor, Steam, and Auxiliary Sail, 1600 tons; and a Second Mate unlimited license for Merchant Ships. He has accumulated more than 25 years of worldwide seagoing experience. Parrott is the author of Tall Ships Down: The Last Voyages of the Pamir, Albatross, Marques, Pride of Baltimore, and Maria Asumpta.

Excellent for single person watchstanding and much more than the usual BRM fare

This is THE book for small ship BRM. So much more than the usual "Areas of Responsibility" and "Make sure to communicate your intentions" stuff that is taught in most BRM courses. On my last small ship, we had single person watchstanders and I asked all the mates and ABs to read this book and discuss each chapter with me as they finished. At first I was met with skepticism, but by the time they were done, even the old timer 2nd Mate was glad that he had read it. And more importantly, he incorporated some of the suggestions into his watchstanding, which meant I slept better at night when he was on watch.

Important read for 100 and 200 ton captains

If you have a 200 ton to 500 ton this is a welcome addition to the industry. Most books and manuals on Bridge Resource Management are written for ships. With only 225 ships registered in the USA, there is a real need to tailor Bridge Resource Management for the tens of thousands of smaller vessels that operate in the USA. The book is well written, an easy read, packed with useful information for small vessel deck officers. I use it in my school, Kennedy Point Maritime School. (www.kpmaritime.org). I like this book. Most deck officers - Captains with 100 ton licenses have never had a class in Bridge Resource Management. There are a number of important considerations presented in this book to aid Captains to stay out of trouble. Basically, don't cut corners. Do everything by the book.

Good book

As a tugboat captain on San Francisco Bay,who had never taken a Bridge Resource Management class, when I saw this book reviewed in one of the professional journals I thought it might be a good lens to review some of my routine practices through. I have been favorably impressed by this work.
It is very well written, quite readable. Capt. Parrott injects just a touch of appropriate humor at places about a very serious subject. He gives very understandable descriptions of various maritime accidents to illustrate the various principles of BRM. More than providing answers, I feel its value is in the questions it raises.
I have suggested to my employer that they provide it to all the captains in our company. I would recommend it to any small vessel professional or even any serious recreational boater.

A Truly Remarkable Book!

This Book is third in a wonderful series by an Amazing Author! War, Family, love, loss, and Happiness are all combined in this incredible book! I found myself rooting for, and identifying with these characters. It was so hard for me to not spend all my time reading this book, yet I savored it, and was so sad when it ended! Emma Harte also made some brief appearances in this book too!

BTB is one of my favorite authors of all time. Having said this, I was truly disappointed with this novel. A confusing array of characters, something I never have a problem with until this novel. Way to much war detail that went on and on. I hung in there but could not wait to finish. Nothing beats Woman of Substance.

Best of the Set

I think this is the best of what I guess you would call Pipes' "Revolutionary Trilogy." "The Russian Revolution," perhaps two or three times the length, is impaired a bit by Pipes' sometimes tedious moral-pointing. "Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime" seems a bit less ambitious than the other two, and in any event it is surely the one least likely to survive the torrent of new material that is becoming available after the fall.
What distinguishes Russia in Pipes' eye is the tradition of "patrimonialism" -- as a political category, a coinage of Pipes' own, though with its roots in Weber, in Hobbes and Bodin, even in Aristotle. Pipes means to denote "a regime where the rights of sovereignty and those of ownership blend to the point of becoming indistinguishable, and political power is exercised in the same manner as economic power."
"Despotism," Pipes continues, "has much the same etymological origins, but over time it has acquired the meaning of a deviation or corruption of genuine kingship, the latter being understood to respect the property rights of subjects. The patrimonial regime, on the other hand, is a regime in its own right, not a corruption of something else."
This is a brave assertion, and Pipes remains faithful to it. Indeed, the core of the book is perhaps his chapter entitled "The Anatomy of the Patrimonial Regime," where Pipes tries to show how utterly different is the tradition of governance in Russia from the tradition in the West -- even in Western nations that we might think of as "reactionary."
There are other virtues to this book. His introductory chapter on the environment is perhaps worth the price of admission, as he retails the grim arithmetic of topsoil and grain production. His discussion of serfdom provokes all kinds of questions about the relationship between serfdom in Russia and slavery in the West.
A work of just 318 pages can hardly pretend to be the last word on the history of a great nation, and Pipes maintains no such pretention. I take it as given that much more could be said to inform, expand upon, or criticize, Pipes' perspective. But as a framework for approaching the study of Russia, it is hard for me to see how it could be bettered. As a provative contribution to the literature of political analysis generally, I should think its claim is equally strong.

Four commonly used projective testing methods: the Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM); the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), the Sentence Completion Test (SCT), and the Animal Preference Test (APT) are then described in detail. Each of these projective methods is in turn presented as dynamically-based tools to indicate the relative performance of the patient across the six core personality domains. Clinical case examples provide both the beginning and more seasoned clinician with a comprehensive psychodynamic paradigm with which to view each of the testing methods, as well as enhanced methods with which to use each of the tests more subtly and hence with greater clinical acumen. A comprehensive battery of projective testing is then assessed through the protocol of a single adult patient, allowing the reader to integrate the value of each of the individual projective methods into a comprehensive assessment of the whole person. In the current climate of clinical psychology training in which depth approaches to assessment and treatment are being deemphasized or eliminated (e.g., American Psychological Association Division 12 Presidential Task Force, 1999) in favor of symptom-focused methods, Tuber’s Understanding Personality Through Projective Testing is a welcome and refreshing antidote. Tuber’s volume follows in the tradition of classics on psychoanalytic psychological assessment such as Rapaport, Gill, and Schafer (1968); Schafer (1954); Allison, Blatt, and Zimet (1968); and Lerner (1998). As important and relevant as those texts continue to be, Tuber communicates his ideas and methods in a manner that is more accessible to contemporary graduate students, pre- and postdoctoral trainees, and early career psychologists who may have had less immersion in psychoanalytic theory than their predecessors in past decades. An experienced clinician, teacher, and supervisor, Tuber strives to write as if the reader is 'sitting in my classroom, sharing the dialogue with me' (p. ix), and he is largely successful. ... A deeply engaging and useful book!

This book is an absolute gem. Tuber is a master clinician and teacher with decades of experience in personality assessment. He outlines -- with exciting clarity -- a vivid, layered psychodynamic theory of personality development. He then teaches the use of projective assessments (the Rorschach, TAT, etc.) in close conjunction with that theory. His view of how to use projective assessments, and what they mean, goes far, far beyond the basics as normally taught. Yet the book remains accessible and beginner-friendly from cover to cover. Tuber's strength as a writer is the lucidity and experience-nearness that he maintains throughout, delightfully sprinkled with clinically informative side-notes and anecdotes. Dr. Tuber has the very rare ability to enliven diagnostic data with the dynamics of developmental theory, all the while making it digestible and clinically relevant. Tuber walks his reader through the tenets of object relations, ego functions and defenses, in addition to the rationale behind his selection of projective tasks. His comments and interpretation of the presented clinical material allows the reader insight into the evaluative process. "Understanding Personality through Projective Testing" is a must have for all of our repertoires as clinicians and diagnosticians alike.

A true, MUST-READ for any tester

I've had the privilege of taking classes with Steven Tuber as a graduate student and beginning clinician and tester. His Assessment class, from which this book is inspired, is legendary - not only because of the sheer breadth and depth of material he skillfully covers with disarming clarity and purpose, but especially because of his ability to bring complex ideas so vividly to life. He stresses the point that the very nature of our experience of ourselves and others is an interaction always bathed in affect. As the best teachers do, he exemplified this fully by showing, not telling, as his infectious passion and sincerity breathed life through important theories and concepts. This gift of learning is captured thoroughly in this latest book and it's thrilling to see it printed for others to take advantage of. It is truly a must-read for any tester - new or experienced.

Worthy of your time and consideration

This book does say that there is a system. It says that the system exists to regulate the rules and realities around us. It argues that instead of wasting time by fighting the establishment through countercultural behaviour, we should make the effort to reform and improve the structures that exist.
It goes on to further show how counterculture behaviour cannot only arrest development, but that its antisocial ideas and actions can harm us. Instead of behaving like adolescents, pointing fingers at the corporations that only sell us what we demand, we should be building a better society through real political process. This distinguishes thoughts and actions between dissent and deviance.
Perhaps you're like me, having already read "No Logo" & "Fast Food Nation". You were a punk in high school and are still seeking ways to "smash the system". Instead of trying to destroy 2000 years of culture, as Atari Teenage Riot would have us do, we should follow the conclusions that the authors reach. This book actually offers sound advice, rather than simply complain. Their ideas are practical and realistic.
Anyone interested in evolutionary psychology will feel at home with terms like "competitive consumption". The authors recognize that our quest for status affects those around us. What they object to is when your aspirations begin to harm society, when it is threatened by zero-sum games. Your attempts at distinguishing yourself from the masses could not only be pointless, but damaging. See their sections on the prisoner's dilemma, where they expand on that borrowed concept.
The authors rarely self-identify during the book, and I found this single voice to facilitate the reading experience. It was a wise decision. Overall, the writing is excellent, especially considering the critical nature of the topic. They also include the word "smacktard", which should be added to your everyday conversation.

Defending social justice from counterproductive radicalism

The Rebel Sell is the most thought-provoking and enjoyable critique of contemporary social and political myths that I have read in a long while. It is carefully argued and extremely engaging. It's a ruthless critique of many icons of contemporary thought, from Klein to Foucault, from Marx to Freud as well as a fascinating interpretation of North-American culture, from American Beauty to Kurt Cobain, from alternative culture to environmentalists. And this is the exact reason why those involved social critique and political activism should read this.
The central argument of the Rebel Sell is simple: since the 50s and 60s, the problem with left-wing politics is that it misdiagnoses the source of problems in society. While the critique of mass society identifies the source of problems in the inhuman and deeply repressive nature of "the system", Heath and Potter argue that 1) there is no such thing as the system and 2) most problems in our society are "collective action problems". The book is excellent at demonstrating the deeply individualistic and entrepreneurial nature of counter-culture and at showing how it feeds, and not rejects, the 'system'.
I was personally fascinated by the role of 'collective action problems' and the left's failure to address them. For instance, the authors argue that the source of most violence in society is rational. Following Freud, the left has ignored this fact, and focused on emotions and instincts. Similarly, the authors argue that consumerism is very much a product of defensive competition in the struggle to maintain status in society. Hence, SUVs, gun ownership, tuition fees, etc. are 'collective action problems', the solution to which does not rest in individual choices, but rather in collective decision-making.
There is a lot more in the book than just this. The authors in fact do an impressively good job at moving from philosophical arguments to actual examples. The sections on the social construction of taste, the importance of cool as a positional good and the discussion of alternative lifestyle are fascinating. In addition, the book has a great index and a very accurate bibliography.
For anyone that is genuinely interested in the social problems of contemporary society, this book is a must-read. It is not a manifesto for political action: in fact, it's most successful achievement is the accurate critique of the most prominent movements and ideas of our time. It is fascinating (and deeply troubling) to see how hypocritical and misguided political movements have been recently. A focus re-shift is necessary, and here's where to start.

good idea bad execution

don't get me wrong. the rebel sell has some great ideas in it, ideas about how we each reinforce the social system even at the same time we denounce it. ie. you can't refer to the masses unless you include yourself as well. The Rebel Sell is a good critique of the modern counter-cultural idea. But unfortuantely the book's concept is not well formed and readers may have a tough time trying to tie it all together.
The Rebel Sell suffers from terrible writing, endless pointless examples that had me dreading turning the next page, hoping in vain that I would find a stunning conclusion, and not just another dismissive tirade. let me give you an example of my biggest annoyance. One of the first chapters takes us through Freud's concepts on the mind and how they still influence our thinking and hence our cultural perspective today. It's a wonderful chapter that had me nodding my head, intriuged, until the chapter abruptly ends with 'but Freud was proven wrong and discredited, so there.' umm, what? care to elaborate? the authors make a lot of these statements. I think the authors mistook a plethora of examples for concrete arguments. the chapters themselves do not vary alot, and i found you could pick up any page, read a few paragraphs, find another page at random, and feel like you didn't miss a thing.
Also, the authors consistently come off as incredibly condescending, and I got the ironic impression that they were trying to start a counter-counterculture movement, or I'm so uber-punk that i've come full circle and wear a suit and work at Halliburton. Actually that sums up the book well.
but if you can get through the book and distill the concepts, it may change the way you look at all our various cultures, counter-cultures and subcultures.
