Classic Indian Cooking, by Julie Sahni

This extraordinary cookbook, Classic Indian Cooking, amounts to a complete course in Indian cuisine. Elucidated by over 100 line drawings, it systematically introduces the properties of all the basic spices and special ingredients of Indian food, then explains the techniques employed in using them, always with the help of comparisons to familiar Western methods.

It is immediately obvious that Indian food is rich and varied, yet not difficult to prepare. The cooking principles are basic and wellknown. The utensils needed are few and simple. As Julie Sahni says, "If you know how to fry, there are few tricks to Indian food." Every recipe has been especially designed for the American kitchen -- practically all the ingredients can be found in any American supermarket and there are scores of time-saving shortcuts with the food processor and handy directions for ahead-of-time preparation.

Following a lively and absorbing introduction to the history of India's classic Moghul cuisine, Julie guides the cook through the individual components that make up an Indian meal. She begins with delicious appetizers like Crab Malabar and Hyderabad lime soup; continues through main courses, both nonvegetarian and vegetarian (this book is a treasure trove for the non-meat eater); goes on to all the side dishes and traditional accompaniments, from spinach raita and lentils with garlic butter to saffron pilaf and whole wheat flaky bread; and ends with the glorious desserts, like Ras Malai, sweetmeats, and beverages. Clear, illustrated, step-by-step instructions accompany the cook through every stage, even for making the many wondrous Indian breads, both by hand and with the food processor. And at the end of each recipe are balanced serving suggestions for every kind of meal, Among the many special features are ideas for appropriate wines, a useful spice chart, a complete glossary (which might also come in handy when ordering in Indian restaurants), and a mailorder shopping guide that will make Indian spices accessible anywhere.

Most important, Julie Sahni imparts the secrets to mastering the art of Indian cooking. Even the beginner will quickly learn to move within the classic tradition and improvise with sureness and ease.

Julie Sahni has written a masterpiece of culinary instruction, as readable as it is usable, a joy to cook from, a fascination to read.

My Favorite Window Into India
By Paul Swanson
Some eight years ago or so, I decided to try to impress both my vegetarian and non-vegetarian friends by making them some authentic Indian dishes. The only thing was, I had no real idea of what I was getting into, as almost all of the Indian food I had eaten had been in restaurants in London and the East Village in Manhattan.
Somehow I found my way to purchasing "Classic Indian Cooking." Slowly and methodically, I then made my way through the very helpful discussions about such things as roasting and crushing spices and herbs and techniques for preparing onions, garlic and ginger root as bases for various curry dishes.
I've since learned that this cookbook was ranked last year as one of six all-time cooking "bibles" by the New York Times. I can see why. It's not a picture text (although there are some helpful illustrations); it's a text for teaching yourself a wholly different cuisine whose fundamental cooking techniques may be completely foreign to many home chefs in the United States, although that seems to be changing.
There are some simply astonishing recipes in this book. You will need to take your time though, because they can be complex and may require preparation of recipe components a day ahead of the time you plan to serve your meal. You should take Julie Sahni's words to heart that cooking should be a "relaxing" enterprise.
If pressed to choose a favorite recipe, it would have to be "Keema Bhare Bandh Gobhi" (meat-stuffed cabbage rolls with ginger lemon sauce), which has a vegetarian counterpart in "Aloo Bhare Bandh Gobhi" (same cabbage rolls, but a vegetarian version stuffed with a spicy potato filling). The extraordinary taste of this meal cannot be found in any Indian restaurant of which I am aware (they tend to stick to a small repertoire of established recipes that in no way define the range of cuisine actually available in India). I have seen these cabbage rolls almost voraciously consumed. That--in my book--is the mark of a great meal.
So, my friends over time have been duly impressed and I must say that I've become a much better cook because of "happening" across this true classic of varied Indian cuisines. Hope you have as much fun with it as I have had over the last eight years!

Great book for novices!
By A Traveler
Though I've eaten a lot of Indian food in restaurants, I'd never cooked Indian food before I bought this book. Nor am I an especially enthusiastic cook. I found Ms. Sahni's book informative (but not overwhelming) and very easy to follow. I've now tried five or six of the recipes and also made usli ghee and paneer--all came out perfectly. The most amazing thing to me was that when Ms. Sahni says, "Let this cook for 15 minutes, then it will start to spatter a little...", that's exactly what happens, practically to the second.
From one novice to many others who may be reading this, be sure you get all your spices and other ingredients measured and ready to go before you start cooking, because often things go in quick sequence. In the ingredient lists, I've also drawn brackets around the spices and other ingredients that go in at the same time so I can measure the group into one bowl and also have a quick reference for the stages of cooking without having to reread the narrative in the steps.
The only thing that has tripped me--and this is slight--is that when hot water is required during cooking, it's stated in the steps but not in the ingredient list. I'm now in the habit of writing it in the ingredient list so I'll know I'll need it ahead of time.
I have a couple of other Indian cookbooks that are also very good, but I keep going back to this one. Great book!!

Among the Classics
By S. Edmondson
Classic Indian Cooking has been a staple reference in my kitchen for years. I rate it among my top 5, along with the classic Julia Childs and out-of-print Gourmet set. It is informative, concise, and clearly written. All of the recipes are successful if they are followed exactly, and the flavors are a delight to the most demanding eater. This is one of the few cookbooks that can be used successfully even if you haven't tasted Indian food before. I strongly recommend purchasing it.

Fine for information
By Slam Crampton
Fine for information, but you don't really need this for step 3- --I advise doing as many questions as possible, you don't need to read anything really. Answers to the test itself are not easy to take from material in books like this, it's more about judgement and management and less about information, if that makes sense

Can serve as an adjunct for quick review.
By doctornewyork
Had purchased this and some other books for further prep after I sat 2CK. This isn't great but it's not bad either. I haven't picked up on errors and it seems to be fairly clean. The only reason I give it three stars is because the content is non-sophisticated (not un-) and doesn't add anything special to what I already knew. However there is a good section on herbs in medicine and their uses/side-effects; it's not that we would ever recommend these to patients, but the section serves for us to know how they relate to one's presentation if a patient mentions one.

What I can say outright is that you'll be bored reading this text if you're fresh out of Step 2CK because the content is fairly basic and easy. *However*, if you haven't touched the material in a while and need a good and CONICISE review, this is definitely a text that one could consider.

Not very clear on what you get with the book.
By Lokana
I purchased this book as it was required for my class. I also required the access code to the Mastering Astronomy website. As best I can tell, this access code only comes comes with it when you order the format "Paperback, January 6, 2011". I had assumed that if buying new, all of them would come with the code and I wasn't clear on what the difference is. The only way I figured out that the higher priced one comes with the access code is that it shows up in the title after you select that format. I didn't find this out until realizing the format I ordered didn't come with it and looked at the different formats to find out why. The formats really should have been labeled more clearly, like "Paperback, with access codes" rather than an unclear "Paperback, January 6, 2011". Honestly I'm not even sure what that is supposed to mean.

This book is likely to become the standard by

which all non-science astronomy books will be measured. It has everything in it, and it's all explained in a straightforward way. Lots of color photos, pictures, and diagrams. There is a lot of material here. you don't HAVE to read it all, but you will probably want to. It's infectious. Several other amateur astronomers I work with have independently come to the same conclusion. We recommend this book first to all our students who show a strong desire to learn the subject.

You might not need the latest version. All it does is give you updates on what has happened in the field over the last few years, which you can find on the internet. You have a choice. You can get the latest version for $80 or a version a few years older that is 98% the same for $5.

The Most Exceptional Textbook This Side of the Galaxy!
By Arthur Blenheim
I love this book! I don't even read text books very often, but this one is one of the most fun text books I've ever read--the fourth edition of "The Essential Cosmic Perspective." Perhaps I say this because I like Astronomy. I've never taken the course before, so this is really the only college text book in this subject I've looked at. Still, everything in here is interesting.

It has been updated with the most recent expansions with two notable points. It contains the most recent alterations of language by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Did you know that Pluto isn't a planet? It's actually a comet! In August of 2006, the IAU changed the definition of planet to account for the differences of the planet Pluto, an object whose composition recently discovered is essentially the same as a comet from the belt of comets just outside of the Solar system: called "the Kuiper belt (pronounced like "viper," but with a K. In 2006, the IAU changed the designation of Pluto to a new category of Solar body: the dwarf planet.

Dwarf planets are not planets, as the definition of a planet now has a finer meaning, changed by the IAU. Planet designations are based on composition and size: the inner four planets--Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars--are referred to as "terrestrial planets," because their compositions are made up mostly of metal and rock, they're all about the same size, and they have two moons or less. Asteroids also have the composition of rock and metal, and so the belt of asteroids lying just outside of Mars gives an interesting connotation about our system which I will explain soon. Then, the four outer planets--Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune--are called "Jovian planets," meaning "Jupiter-like," because their compositions are mostly gaseous, and because of their sizes: "gas giants." These Jovian, gas giants are several times the mass and diameter of the terrestrial planets, and so their sizes make them considerable to the system. What sets these solar bodies apart the most is THE WAY THEY WERE FORMED which accounts for their composition differences, and therefore the asteroid belt is the boundary line between the inner-terrestrial and outer-Jovian planets of the Solar system.

Every Solar body with an orbit on a somewhat-similar elliptical plane and beyond Neptune is a comet of the Kuiper belt. Although Uranus and Neptune also have essentially a similar gaseous composition as comets like Pluto, the main difference is Pluto has a radius of about 1000 kilometers. Anything that small is considered to be a comet, and, because the comets of the Kuiper belt are usually very small, Pluto resembles them more than a planet, as it is much smaller than even Earth's Moon. Pluto's mass is about 18 percent that of the Moon.

Remember the tenth planet, "Planet X?" Planet X, the tenth planet, was known as "Planet X" because scientists thought that, because it was so small and had the composition of a comet, that these were fundamental differences between comets and planets of the solar system. They felt that, if every newly-discovered comet of the Kuiper belt orbiting the Sun could be called a planet because it revolved around the Sun, our new computerized telescopes would be discovering planets quite frequently; comets, no matter how small they are, would be called "planets," by old definitions. That's why these new definitions are in place now. Pluto has enjoyed the stature of a planet for about 75 years since its discovery, but now that designation is over.

Additionally, the Jovian worlds are known for their multiple moons. Pluto has a moon, but, because its center-of-gravity lies outside of its moon Charon, both Pluto and Charon should actually be referred to as "binary planets," or more correctly "binary dwarf planets" by IAU's new definition--or rather a "binary system of dwarf planets." A planet and a dwarf planet are separate categories of solar bodies and not the same.

Incidentally, speaking of the Moon, the Moon is thought to have been a planet that, at one time, moved around the Sun. Scientists think this because of the size which is roughly the same as Mercury, a terrestrial composition, and it has a similarly substantial amount of gravity. It theoretically took an orbit around the Earth after they collided based on the attractions of their gravity, after which the Moon started orbiting around the Earth. The Moon is also similar to Mercury in that neither of these bodies maintain any atmosphere.

If you hate Al Gore, well--guess what--the same charts used in Al Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" are in this book: a major subsection of one of the chapters. This may be a point of either hostility or remorse for those Americans who were comforted by the anti-Gore beliefs of "the Flat World Society": apparently, some scientists think Al Gore actually has facts within his determinations. This book also states the reasons for these conclusions and relates them to a runaway greenhouse effect. If anyone needs an explanation of why people should be concerned, this is as pedestrian as it comes.

Although Venus is thought to be Earth's sister planet, there is nothing there to comfort any human. It has clouds of battery acid! Until 2006, no one could even see through its thick atmosphere due to an extreme greenhouse effect, and in the past only a form of radio technology could view the planet only slightly. In 2006, the European Space Agency (ESA) landed an unmanned spacecraft there to take pictures and send back data about the surface. The "Venus Express" lander, a specially-made craft designed to withstand Venus' harsh atmosphere, lasted for only about an hour on the surface, then corroded into uselessness and dissolved from the extremities of the atmosphere there. You see, there is no water or oxygen on Venus: the extreme greenhouse effect would've caused its oceans to evaporate into space. The atmosphere on Venus is so thick, the pressure at its surface translates to the pressure of one mile beneath the surface of one of Earth's oceans. This book refers to Venus' surface as resembling "a traditional view of hell" (144).

More importantly, although Mercury orbits the Sun at half the distance as Venus, Mercury's surface temperatures are substantially lower than Venus'. This sounds counter intuitive, and it is. But, the reason for it is the extreme greenhouse effect on Venus. And so, although Venus is twice as far from the Sun, it is MUCH hotter there than on Mercury! While Mercury's temperature goes back-and-forth between 700 kelvins (K) in the day and 100 K at night, Venus has a constant average temperature of 740 K (880-degrees Fahrenheit) all the time!

All this information is located within this book. The writing all seems very well put. The glossary has all the terms located in the chapter questions sections, so students should have an easy time finding anything. The chapter information, as it is introduced, is labeled nicely in easy-to-read bold upon its introduction, so eyes can quickly move right to the place where to find that information. The index is large and covers anything I would want to know. It has beautiful photos, images, and tables, in color of course. Many of these shots are brand-new images from off-earth, satellite telescopes and unmanned space vehicles. Of course, I have some doubt about the context of a few of the pictures, but there's surely nothing missing that NASA or other space agencies have allowed to be released: the book is up-to-date.

The book comes with interactive things like on-line supplements and a CD-Rom. The CD-Rom contains a program allowing a student to view any known place from any other known place through a telescope: one can look at Earth from the Moon for instance, and receive technical information about it. You can copy the CD-Rom onto another blank CD or put it on a hard drive for free. The book's included on-line supplemental course features are interactive and reiterate the book's material.

I have not opened the envelope containing the on-line password for fear of reducing the sell-back cost at my college--once a student has opened the envelope containing the on-line pass code key, the envelope cannot be sold back, can only be used once. I regret not having used it, because the Pearson, Addison-Wesley website was extremely helpful in one other course in which I used its on-line supplements. I can only imagine how beautiful the on-line astronomical images are. I would steal the images and put them on my computer desktop, or make a screen saver with them. Maybe I'll open it now, anyway, even though I'm nearly through the course.

If you purchase this text book here at Amazon, make sure you also receive the envelope, because it is worth around thirty or forty dollars. Students can buy the code at the web site without the envelope, but know that the envelope is part of the text book and should come with it unless the seller provides product information stating otherwise. I once had someone sell me a text for college algebra on Amazon with a price about thirty dollars less than Amazon's price. When I received the algebra text, it didn't have the envelope with it! The text was also used-but-wrapped-in-plastic, even though that product description stated the book was new! It may have come to me in plastic, but it wasn't new! Because the envelope containing the on-line code was missing, I peered closely at the book itself and confirmed that the book was USED, because of dirty palm prints on the book. I called the seller and sent it back at the seller's cost with the included mail-return sticker. I don't like people selling me something under false pretenses! Make sure the envelope is in the wrapper; otherwise, you're giving away thirty or forty bucks. Make sure also that the CD-Rom is in there, too.

Tibet Wild: A Naturalist's Journeys on the Roof of the World, by George B. Schaller

As one of the world's leading field biologists, George Schaller has spent much of his life traversing wild and isolated places in his quest to understand and conserve threatened species - from mountain gorillas in the Virunga to pandas in the Wolong and snow leopards in the Himalaya.

Throughout his celebrated career, Schaller has spent more time in Tibet than in any other part of the world, devoting more than thirty years to the wildlife, culture, and landscapes that captured his heart and continue to compel him to protect them.

Tibet Wild is Schaller's account of three decades of exploration in the most remote stretches of Tibet: the wide, sweeping rangelands of the Chang Tang and the hidden canyons and plunging ravines of the southeastern forests.

As engaging as he is enlightening, Schaller illustrates the daily struggles of a field biologist trying to traverse the impenetrable Chang Tang, discover the calving grounds of the chiru or Tibetan antelope, and understand the movements of the enigmatic snow leopard. As changes in the region accelerated over the years, with more roads, homes, and grazing livestock, Schaller watched the clash between wildlife and people become more common - and more destructive.

Thus what began as a purely scientific endeavor became a mission: to work with local communities, regional leaders, and national governments to protect the unique ecological richness and culture of the Tibetan Plateau. Whether tracking brown bears, penning fables about the tiny pika, or promoting a conservation preserve that spans the borders of four nations, Schaller has pursued his goal with a persistence and good humor that will inform and charm readers. Tibet Wild is an intimate journey through the changing wilderness of Tibet, guided by the careful gaze and unwavering passion of a life-long naturalist.

A Last Gasp?
By Charles S. Fisher
In the late 1960s restless in my academic job, I wanted to volunteer to help George Schaller in his forthcoming study of pandas in China. Tim Asch, the anthropological film maker, warned me against the project. He was right, as can be seen in Peter Mathiessen's portrayal of Schaller the in the book, "Snow Leopard." On my best day I could not have kept up with Schaller on his worst. He notes in this volume that he hurt his knee at one point, the only injury he had suffered in thirty years. Unbelievable but no less, I am sure, true. Now Schaller, a few years my senior, seems to be facing the existential challenge of the meaning of his life. By nature Schaller is not the introspective type. He admits the greatest motive in his studies has been the desire to be out in the wilds, hiking, observing, taking in the beauties of exotic landscapes. In that he is not much different from friends who became marine biologists because they loved to dive, or why I was often absent from the university in the Fall. I could not stand being indoors that much, especially in New England autumn. Discounting the refuges and protections that his studies have lead to, Schaller feels that the most meaningful contribution he has made is in the training of naturalists and rangers. He is a wanderer: " ...in any...place... I feel rootless, unconnected, always traveling in my mind...never quite satisfied..." His compassion was aroused by the conflict between herders and snow leopards, but he "had no way of providing direct help during my fleeting visits..."

Schaller also mentions that telemetry, GPS, radio collars, camera traps, DNA and computers, while collecting data that would have either been very hard won or impossible, are shifting field work away from his kind of wandering and patient personal observation. He doesn't discuss the existential challenge that what has been called "fat man biology" is to the naturalist who loves to be immersed in nature. I never figured out whether Schaller speaks any of the languages in the countries he explored. And for Schaller's first 12 years his father worked for the Nazi government but Schaller does not mention if that had any influence on his life, positive or negative.

Trying to make this book more personal, (some of his studies are quite dry), Schaller's writing is not so juicy. Yet if he is not deeply introspective he is certainly a master of what he does: travel round the world seeking out endangered animals and places that need to be preserved. It is bewildering trying to follow his activities. Though not all in this book he bounces from the Himalayas to the Brazilian jungle. I read the book over a period of some four weeks. I would not recommend addressing it that way. I got confused as to places and dates, and having finished the book, I can't say what the organizing principal was. But each adventure is fascinating. Antelope, Goats, Bears, Snow Leopards. The wilds of Tibet, Mongolia, China, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan both independent and as part of the old Soviet Union. Only a few of the maps in the book are adequate to follow the narrative. So I resorted to Google Earth, something I have rarely used. Still it was difficult to follow. I didn't want to keep my computer on my lap while I was reading. I am old-fashioned enough to like the feel of a newspaper or book in my hands and the freedom to read in any position.

So what is controversial in the book. Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism, # 1. Schaller's book ends on a note of how Buddhism supports beliefs he see as necessary for conservation, but evidence in the book reveals it is often otherwise. A few monasteries he visits are conservation minded, but then the members there seem quite ordinary people with interests that are not dictated by some deep spiritual drive. In fact much of the Tibet Schaller describes seems the same. In his non-introspective way he does not go deeply into the political contradictions in the areas he visits. It would seem that the Chinese are the best at both dedicating resources and science to preservation even though there are corrupt elements undermining that effort. Despite the anti-Chinese, self-righteous comments of the Dalai Lama's celebrity acolytes, the railway between Golmund and Lhasa was built with great ecological care, the underpasses enabling chiru to migrate even though they were not built with that in mind. And during the Soviet period things were better for survival and conservation in both Tajikistan and the Afghani Wakan intrusion. As for the rest of the countries, their efforts seem more gestures than enforceable regulation. India is particularly bad. Schaller acknowledges the conflicts between setting land aside as reserves and the subsistence needs of the people who live nearby. His solution is to include them in the take of ecotourism or trophy hunting, but excluding the more distant although native market extractors. And here despite their Buddhism, local Tibetans seem just as good at poaching and killing as their non-Buddhist neighbors. He is even accused in the 1990s of being pro-Chinese because the Tibetan diaspora wants the world to believe it is only the Han who despoil the environment and the not the Tibetans he shows poaching wild chiru for their fine wool. He mentions that when in 2006 the Dalai Lama criticized the killing of tigers and other fur animals, their pelts disappeared from the Lhasa markets and people gathered together to burn them. I find it a bit far fetched that all of a sudden traders would destroy their livelihoods, but who knows. Schaller claims the Han took over the trade. The Chinese keep captive wild animals whom they milk for bile. Tibetan herders kill picas because they believe they compete with sheep for forage. Schaller asks, "Does the Buddha urge....compassion toward all living being--except picas." So he wrote fables about picas directed at the herders.

You gotta love George Schaller. He is one of a kind. Few in the world match him. So do not think my comments are anything other than a loving examination of the world that he stirs up. I might have chosen to live his life rather than mine, but I neither had the physical strength nor the courage. It was probably much easier to live as he did without deep introspection. He certianly accomplished a lot more. This book is a worthy read and despite his 76 years he may produce many more.

Great book from a superstar of conservation
By Yeti
Tibet, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, western China, Nepal and restive north-east India all have one thing in common when it comes to making big news around the world: violence. That is unfortunate, but this is the area where the great Dr. Schaller has done fantastic work from surveys to helping establish new reserves for the wildlife he loves so much. This book is about ecology, conservation and his spiritual journey in the area. He's seen the area since the middle of the last century, and as a naturalist possesses the gift for observation.

I have tremendous respect for the work and life of Dr. Schaller and I think this book is a must read for all who've followed the work of this wonderful naturalist and gifted writer. It is especially a must-read for people who know nothing about the region as it opens up a new insight into a region that is often painted so negatively.

Then why is this book not worth a five star rating? Compressing five decades into ~300 pages can be difficult. I felt a lot of discontinuity and some experiences too short or skimmed in order to be able to put into a book. I'm sure even if it were 5 volumes of 500 pages each there wouldn't be space for all that he's seen and learned there, but I think it would do more justice to his work! Oddly, I came across several repeated information in the chiru chapters as I didn't expect that in a condensed book.

I didn't enjoy his preference to the use of pack animals. It was particularly sad that donkeys were overloaded and beaten and some died of exhaustion and cold and some abandoned when he went on with a professional trekking guide during one of his surveys. And then the yaks sitting down due to exhaustion. I'm not so sure the survey's are worth abusing animals or people, especially when the animals are not meant to do such things.

I also didn't enjoy his endless rebuking of local people from showing them as corrupt, lazy, dishonest, authoritative and what not. Unfortunately, a lot of that behavior comes not because people want to be that way, but they are forced to be that way due to their association, competition, culture or just out of desperation. I know, because I'm from the region. One of the methods described as something that works - compensation - doesn't really work in its full potential. Yes, Dr. Schaller saw an official handing out rupees to the Ladakhi for compensation seems to show it works, but he's not there all the time. From what I understand, compensation rarely goes to the real victim, or at least not the full amount. Unfortunately, I worry about the corruption for any scheme where money is involved. However, such sensitive topics are best left to be written by local conservationists or the press will unfairly think of it as a race or other such nonsensical issues. And this the reason I felt that Dr. Schaller should have left out judging of people from this book as what's said is not the whole picture and has a complex background (tribe, caste, class, religion, color and all).

I liked his work on the proposal of the peace park in the Pamirs along the lines of other parks (Btw, it's Waterton Lakes bordering Glacier and not Banff!). Southern Africa has several of those near Okavango river and the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) and it's great to see animals not hindered by fences, passports and such. I do hope the Pamir Peace Park will become a reality in the lifetime of Dr. Schaller.

Overall, it's a great book by a wonderful naturalist. There's lots of interesting nuggets of wisdom.

An inspiring read
By Sam R
What I enjoyed most in this great book was the glimpse into the life of a "feral biologist". While the descriptions of Tibet and it's people were wonderful, I found Schaller's reflections on his own life compelling, poignant and, ultimately, inspiring. His passion and dedication are obvious, and the fact that he is working alongside Tibetan and Han Chinese gives me hope for the future of wildlife on the Tibetan plateau. Thank you for writing this!

Just brilliant
By elaineb
I have to say that I have read tons of Martina cole books and so far this is the best one.
It starts by telling us about Sarah Ryan and her circumstances and then we learn about the rest of her children.
She has eight boys and one girl.
The story is mainly about Maura and how she transformed from being an innocent girl to being one of the toughest criminals in England .
I can't wait to read the follow up which is called mauras game.
Fans of Martina cole will love this book
